I understand that this sort of thing has been asked many times before. But I would appreciate it if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction, or provide some suggestions etc regarding the best use of my 53,000 QF points. Let's just round that up to 55,000 points, however, and work with that.

A little bit about me to begin... As one with a lowly bronze status, lounge access and the like is nothing important. Nor is flying business - as much as I do like to be spoilt and love a little luxury, it's also the trip itself, as a whole, which is fun. And I only fly for leisure, as a full-time student who works only two days a week. I'm based in MEL with relatives in ADL and CNS and a girlfriend in BNE. However, using points for short domestic hops seems hardly worth it, especially considering those recent $39 MEL-BNE fares I snagged the other day. Also, it seems most likely that I won't be going overseas properly until an extended trip in 2016. Which makes it rather difficult, since there's no point in doing a little JASA run if I'm only going to hit silver.

I had originally been wanting to use these points on an EK-metal DXB - MRU return fare, since I'd always been intending to drop past the Middle East anyway, and knowing a friend in MRU would mean a free place to stay down there. But, as I said, getting to the Middle East won't be at least until 2016. And if one thing turns into another with 'Miss BNE' then, well, you know what's it like... ;)

So, now I'm after alternative suggestions as to the best routes, albeit with 55,000 points which isn't altogether that much. The further I can fly seems more important to me at this stage, rather than upgrades (though ask me again on my 85th birthday...) If need be, I suppose you might convince me to grab a 'BR' fare to SIN with QF and do something from there. Or from NZ or Fiji.

Of course, I could redeem points for a MEL - SIN flight, but what I'd be paying in taxes makes it seem rather pointless, given that it's possible to get there for under $500 return anyway.

Broome? Curiosity kills the cat, so they say, but then it seems rather exotic for a Melbournite. Noumea or Port Moresby from BNE? Hmm, but then again the taxes are something that holds me back on that one. Granted I've only got 55,000 points here to work with, so that's going to be an issue I can't avoid anyway. Lord Howe Island is only 16,000 points, so I believe, and maybe $100 in taxes or so each way.

Come at me folks, bounce your opinions off me!

Rather than flights, and being a uni student, how much of your diet is made up of toast?

There are some lovely toasters on the FF Store.

You're right there, but already got a toaster!

I see I can get to BAH or DXB for 48,000 points one way. If perhaps I could get a cheap fare back, there's $600 from DXB to PER, for example. But then, fares are $900 return to DXB anyway, which would mean I could do the MRU run. HNL, ZQN... Any more suggestions?

One way to LAX using points and then look for a cheap flight back via HNL or NAN?
