In April 2024 I am again planning to tool around eastern Rhône-Alpes (as it used to be)

.. with a car and spending most time in Haute-Savoie but spending maybe 3 nights/4 days in and around Lyon. My interests are history, landscapes and wine, so the roman ruins, Vienne, prehistoric paintings at Caverne du Pont d'Arc ❤️ and the old parts of Lyon etc are all on my radar.

Wonder if anyone has suggestions for other visits in the district, especially to the east; maybe the Lyon-Valence-Geneva triangle? Medieval villages, very rural great restaurants etc.

I've been around Nimes, Arles, Chambery and Annecy

@esseeeayeenn I found your post here , plus @VPS at various times, although usually further south (which I followed previously :) )

Also, accommodation. Usually I'd try to stay near the old town, but maybe not in Lyon (parking, cost, time to get in & out). Any suggestions for around the periphery; maybe close to metro? Or stay right out (suggestions?) and train in for day trips?

Most of the places I visited may be a bit too far south for you.

Just off the top of my head - My friend had a house just out of Uzes which is a lovely little town and I enjoyed Avignon. If you go a bit further south Tarascon/Beaucaire has some interesting castles. Is There Anything to See in Tarascon and Beaucaire, France? - Travelsewhere

Orange is a pleasant town and has an old Roman theatre. The Pont du Gard is worth seeing as is Isle sur la Sorgue

It's a few years since I was in Lyon so most of the restaurants may be out of date but it was quite walkable with a good tourist train

Not sure if Prades would be too far south but we really enjoyed a few days there. Could head out to Mt Canigou and look at a few rocks :)
