Just ticketed my first ever SQ flight in J - MEL-SIN-CDG in August. Looking forward to, amongst other things, trying out the "book the cook" service.

Looks like I'll be having lunch and refreshment (no book the cook available on the latter) on MEL-SIN and supper and breakfast on SIN-CDG.

Obviously food is a personal choice at the end of the day, but any feedback / thoughts on good choices from those who have used the book the cook service previously? At the moment I'm thinking roasted duck with rice, lobster thermidor and dim sum for lunch / supper / breakfast respectively.

I've enjoyed the lobster thermidor and my MIL enjoyed a chicken dish, can't remember what.

I didn't like the lobster thermidor, but I had never had it before so didn't really know what to expect.

Lobster Thermidor is an acquired taste....I acquired the taste for it over 3 decades ago and I still love it.
Caviar grows on you as well and then champagne on SQ is definitely something to try and try and....

Had the roasted duck with rice - not bad...probably better (to me) than the regular meals menu when I flew
I am a fan of nasi lemak - loved it, nice change having it for brekky as you would in Asia
Interestingly SQ J manages to serve their green veggies in a green crunchy state compared with QF J and F when they seem to come out dark green and mushy!
(fed up with the sausage/bacon/egg... for brekky)
Enjoy!

the dark green mushy beans must be a fault in the preparation by the F/A preparing the dish..over the last few months (at least), the J and F beans come on board fresh/crunchy and are only required to be 'blanched' for a few minutes in their foil container with hot water (and not in an oven) prior to serving to retain their colour/freshness/crunchiness

I have never been served caviar when in the J cabin :(

To the OP, hopefully you have 388 or 77Ws on those MEL-SIN-CDG routing.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I've never had lobster thermidor before and want to try it - will be interesting to see if I like it or not. Good to hear the duck with rice is at least "not bad" :)

Nasi lemak... I agree, like that stuff a lot, but thought dim sum would be a little different - anyone had the dim sum breakfast before?

Unfortunately it's a refitted 777-300 MEL-SIN (SQ238) :-( Hoping for a last minute equipment change, but really it's not such a big deal given it's a daytime flight. A380 SIN-CDG, which is the important one to get the better bird for. On the same A380 flight I'm going to have four work colleagues down the back in Y... going to be fun staggering down there and taunting them ;);) Might have to try and get some champagne sent back to them to ease the pain.

Whilst I'm at it, I'm currently in 12A and 14A for the two flights respectively. Both look to be good seats from what I've read, but any feedback / suggestions?

Hi Waflion
Duck is definitely my regular pick washed down with whetever red is on offer.
On the 380 Forward cabin is definitely the go for a bit less noise......so long as there is no baby in 11a bassinette!!!!!!!!!
Cheers Danger UXB

wafliron,
Assume you have looked at the menus to see the different choices out of each city.

Book the cook

eg. No lobster thermidor from MEL, a seafood thermidor from SYD (which I have had and really enjoyed)
SIN has better breakfast selections, from SYD/MEL you are better with the plane selection

Yes - that's how I made my original selections, as per my OP. Lobster thermidor is selected for SIN-CDG, not MEL-SIN.

Just had the "Book the cook" eye fillet on MEL-SIN. Fabulous
The 6oz rib eye on the way back was horrible. The main menu, beef fillet looked way better
p.s. Didn't realise that the "yummy" menu was a kids menu. You can imagine Mrs Duffa's face when breakfast rocks up with cordial, raisins, and chicken nugggets. I copped it, over that one

Mrscove liked your "book the cook" experience Duffa. We are all learning and no one gets to do the perfect trip.

Interesting breakfast, sounds like the sort of thing my kids would concoct themselves when I'm fast asleep after a big night out

Haha, I almost made that mistake too - thought some of the "Yummy!" selections looked OK but got suspicious about a meal labelled "Yummy!" and Googled it.

Yes the best selections are out of SIN....

Looks like the Kyo Kaiseki (Japanese Degustation) is only available from SIN.

Tempting !

Had the real thing while in Japan in April - Really good / light at the same time.

Will book that one & report back to you guys

I think you just helped me select my meal for a Suites flight next year :) Please do report back on what it is like.

Sure, I will

It looks more appealing than "fish congee" or "chicken rice" - sounds like food court dishes to me

Decisions !

Decisions !

Do you realise there is no BTC offering from CDG (to SIN) ?

SQ cannot attract any good chef from the City of Lights ??? Hard to believe
