I will have accumulated about 75,000 Krisflyer points and 140,000 QFF points by the end of the year.
About 35,000 Krisflyer points will expire shortly.
I am looking at the best use of these points.
Perhaps a trip to Singapore or Hong Kong, flying SQ one way and QF the other, booking economy and upgrading with points.
Is this a good use of the points?

I intend travelling with Mrs Graemeha, by the way.

Bad use of point. Whatever you do, unless your company is paying for your trip or you need the elite miles to qualify for gold status, do not waste KF point on upgrades. Reason:
1. You need to buy most expensive flexi fare to be eligible for upgrade.
2. Points needed for upgrade is about as much as a redemption ticket. From memory, AUS-SIN is 45000 upgrade, 46850 redeem outright. You get the same inventory anyway, ie. if seat is avaiable for upgrade, it is available for award redemption.

With your situation, unfortunately I have to be honest with you, there is not much you can do with 75000 miles for 2 people, either upgrade or redeem an award ticket, you just haven't got enough. You can redeem economy one way x 2, but you still need to pay for fuel surcharge which is about $200, and you still need to find a way to come back, you might as well buy discount economy fare, which sometimes can be as low as ~$600 rt.

The question is, do you have any credit cards points that can convert to KF or VA points? If you do, you can top up your KF account to enough points for redemption of 2 x business class to SIN (With VA, just convert to KF). If not, you can consider:
1. Sign up a CC with huge sign up bonus that can be converted to KF points. Citi signature card and Westpac black altitude all offer good sign up bonus.
2. Buy Star points from SPG. They are running a promotion at the moment which gives you 25% discount and you can convert to KF points. But you need to have a SPG account that is at least 14 days old, which I am afraid that you can't make he promotion deadline which is 31 May.

Worst comes worst, you can always convert your KF points to VA points to prevent it from expiring.

(You can always let her travel business while you travel economy.:p)

With your QFF points, you do have enough for 2 x J SIN-AUS. But availability on QF can be hard to find. Emirates might be easier though

Addition:

One thing I forgot. You can also purchase extra miles from Singapore Air as long as you have 50% of the miles needed for redemption. In your case, to have 2xJ AUS-SIN, you need about 93700 miles, since you have 75000, you only need an additional 19000-20000 miles, which you can purchase t USD$40/1000 miles from SQ, a total of USD$760-800, roughly about $1000. It's not cheap, but it is certainly cheaper than buying 2 flexi economy and get an upgrade (which you don;t have enough miles anyway, so you still need to buy).

VAG Newbie, thanks for the response.
I know that I don't have many KF points, we accumulated them from a trip to Europe on Singapore airlines a couple of years ago (hence they are about to expire).
We are going again later this year via Star Alliance (Swiss International).
I am accumulating points on my CC only for QFF.
With my work I don't fly much, and if I accumulate points it is only with QFF.
I do have about 7,700 CBA CC points that can be converted to VA points, not many by the time they end up with KF.

Thank you for the advice regarding purchasing extra miles from Singapore Air. I was not aware of that.

You need to consider:
1. When do your KF points expire? Are you gonna have enough points in your account before your old points expire.
2. What booking class is your SWISS? Will they earn KF points? If yes, what percentage? Cheaper economy class ticket may not earn any points at all, or at a significant lower percentage.

Unfortunately that won't help you much.

You are welcome. It is actually a very simple process. As you try to book online, at the check out page it will tell you how many more miles you need and you just pay the additional miles at $40 USD/1000 mile, so it can easily be done online. I suspect this might be your best option now. It's not cheap, but may be better than letting all those miles expire. I just flew back from Paris with SQ first suite and I can tell you it was a amazing experience. I answered your question using the computer in the Private Room in Changi! SQ is one of my favorite airlines.

We flew Y to Europe in Oct/Nov 2013, so I assume that they (about 21,000 points each) will expire in Oct 2016

This is our first Business Class trip. They will be earning KF points. That is how our balance will be getting up to 75,000 by the end of the year.

Thanks for that. This looks like the way that we will proceed.
One way with SQ and come back with QF

The easiest and cheapest option would be using KrisFlyer miles for economy awards on the way over to HKG and the Qantas points for business class awards return. Taxes ex-HKG on Qantas will be lower.

If you join SPG you can buy 20,000 points for US$525 , which then can transfer to KF at 1:1 + 5,000 bonus when transferring in 20,000 lots. That means, US$525 for 25,000 KF points (which is much cheaper than buying it directly from KF at US$40 per 1,000 points).

Assuming you want to fly business class or first, I would the Qantas flights first in whatever direction you can get seats because that would be most difficult, then worry about redeeming SQ flights because it is much easier.

I didn't know you got that much time! I thought your points were gonna expire in 3 months!

In that case, you got more than enough time to consider other option and I wouldn't recommend buying points from SQ. As Alan Legal suggested, consider buying points from SPG. You probably won't be in time for current promotion, but there will be another one around Dec. it's worth signing up SPG now, it's free anyway.

But the best way is probably signing up a credit card with big sign up bonus that can be converted to KF point. Citi signature is offering 60000 points (= 45000 KF points) sign up bonus for an annual fee of $299. That's way cheaper than buying 20000 points from either SPG or SQ for $600-800 USD. If you still want to concentrate your CC earning on QF points, you can just cancel the card after you received your sign up bonus and converted to KF, and you have 12 months to do it, although I would consider KF points much more valuable than QF points.

Of course you can only do it if you have good credit score, which you can find out for free at:

Doesn't the Citibank offer takes 3 months to come through through?

Re. the QFF points, don't forget that 140K points is enough to travel around the world (in economy) on a oneworld award.
