As I got my premier account in US, they sent me an email to arrange welcome call with RM. During the welcome call I mentioned that I wish to apply credit card and my RM sent a PDF application form. 2 days after I signed it RM came to me saying that the credit card team requested my Aus payslips. 2 business day after submission, my credit card is approved.

I applied online and they called me from UK regarding my application. I cannot exactly remember what they asked but it was a pretty smooth process for me.

I am interested in applying but I don't want it to count toward 5/24

So you can see with approx USD1300 you can get 41k points and there is a 50% bonus if you transfer out to QF so you could get 60k points on that purchase.

You can also at times book Marriott through Rove and if you have status it can be applied. Other times cheaper to book direct, so again YMMV.

You can transfer to Qatar and if that can get transferred to BA you can book say SYD-MEL with 6500 Avois points plus taxes. Cathay, Virgin Atlantic (hear it’s great between JFK-LHR for J redemptions), Etihad, JAL, Flying Blue and more.

Worth exploring if you have a US cell no & doesn’t require SSN or ITIN.

When you make an application did you put ITIN or use your US address?

Is there currency risk though? If you can "hold" the currency in one of your home (or a strong, anyway) currency, then the forex risk is mitigated. That's not to say it's risk free, and there's oppo cost of having a chunk of change stuck somewhere, but it's an option (I dumped GBP cash into HK to push my TRB up, for example - it stayed GBP and I was able to move it in/out as needed).

Great point! Esp with Global Transfers would make it effortless to move cash to other regions. Bigger question now is what hoops each region would need (if any) for remote opening. Also looks like HSBC Egypt was sold as well so one more to cross off the list.

I didn't have an ITIN when I applied. I called once I had one issued and they sent me a W8-BEN online to complete with it. If you never provide your ITIN, chance it wouldn't report/split file but they also use other info for data matching so it's a gamble.

Re HSBC GT - I found their rates pretty appalling for transferring cash, I've been using Revolut instead - have got premium with them and much better value!

Oh yeah, you pay the premium just for fast transfers, mainly good for emergencies. Revolut/Wise much better on rates. Just waiting for them to have high quality subs on the plans to make it worth it... No AI or Uber One plan on the AU plans sadly.
