Strategy to obtain US Amex

Well this time (compared with Feb when I used a commercial US VPN) I applied from my Aus IP address, as I assumed this was what had triggered the fraud alert.

After a few transfers, it turns out this application was with the Fraud team (again !)

This time, the Fraud team couldn't use my Tello number, or my GV number (neither number "met their requirements") to send me a one time code, so that was that - told me he couldn't proceed further and to visit a branch

Really don't know what else I could do differently, given that Tello works for my Amex and C1 accounts...
I had the same issue where I wasn't receiving the verification code on my mobile number. Eventually, I spoke with a customer service agent who asked me a few security questions instead, and they were able to access my application.

When you call, you could mention that a previous colleague/customer service representative was able to access your application after asking a few security questions, and ask if they can do the same. It really depends on the agent you speak with, so if they can't help, try calling again and speaking with someone else. Hopefully, you'll get an agent who can assist.

Were you an existing Chase customer ?
I think for whatever reason they are putting my application straight into fraud, and I suspect the fraud department may have less leeway to do this for a new customer...

They maybe able to see some ownership data.

Normally, if you are on a postpaid plan, your carrier may have your real name and identity information on file because you usually need to verify your identity, and sometimes pass a credit check to open the account. If the phone number information matches the name on the application, it helps verify your identity in a way. But it's not really neccessary as they can still verify you using something else.

Prepaid is less reliable. The number could still be linked to a previous owner, or there may not be enough verified information attached to it. So if a prepaid number works, you are very lucky.

I have Google Voice and T-Mobile prepaid, and they never work with Chase verification, even though they work fine for 2FA. Reverse lookup already shows my name on both numbers so that isn't enough for verification. I used Google Voice for 7-8 Chase apps with no issue.

They also work fine for Capital One 2FA, but there was one part where they didn’t work. I believe it was when I tried to get a virtual card. Capital One may have used a similar phone verification service to Chase for that step.
I get fraud text with chase with Tello. Sometimes when applying for new credit, it doesn't work but then they ask questions.

You sounds like you're more knowledge than me about this

I got 7 cards approved with Chase from about 9-10 applications. All of them went to fraud except one. That was the last one when I applied from inside the app. So don’t worry too much about applications going to fraud. It is common for both new and existing customers.

For all those applications, my phone never worked for verification. It was only with that last application that Chase started using the mobile app to verify me, after I made some settings change.

Probably just have to keep trying and hope you get lucky (no going to branch cough). I’m trying to get P2 into Chase as well.

So you reckon HUCA - but when they say "we can't proceed as we can't send a text to your Tello number", what should I do there ??

If they didn’t try to verify you with questions after that and told you to go to a branch straight away, then it’s probably not just a phone verification issue. Wait a bit and apply again. There probably isn’t any other way.

No, I was a new customer. I believe my application was referred to the fraud team, and they were the ones who processed and approved it.

The issue is that Chase just refused to use my Tello number (which I’ve had for a year and have been using with C1 without issue)

If they are starting to insist on post paid numbers only, that’s becoming ridiculous

I also don’t understand the thinking behind insisting on sending a one time code to a potential new client’s number. They don’t have that number on file previously verified, so how does sending a code to a random number actually verify anything ?
As others have said not being able to verify you makes little difference if any. Do whatever

Prior to Tello, Chase verification texts didn't work. I always requested for them to call me back on your US number (they specifically need to ring you back then and there) and they do the manual verification from there. This was ~1 year ago

Chase verifications work fine with Tello. But I am STILL getting occasional texts from US Doordash when the previous owner of the number orders pizza from Little Caesars. I once texted the dasher and said that guy no longer owns this number. But how is he able to keep ordering food when I have had this number well over a year?

Applied for a Chase card with a VPN 1-2 months ago, and got stuck at ID verification via that weird mobile app. Did multiple HUCAs and uploaded ID manually - but seems like I'm just stuck behind some fraud lock. No issues with receiving codes via Redpocket mobile though.
