Stopovers - what does this mean?

I did a dummy a booking JFK LAX MEL LAX JFK

the conditions say I can have two free stopovers and two at $$$$

How could you have more than two on the above routing?

In order to get the first stopover ie in LAX, one would need to make a tele booking thereby incurring a fee? Is that correct?

No refund.
This fare may be used as a credit towards the payment of any higher fare from the point of origin, provided the new fare conditions are met. If the new fare is cancelled, the original fare cancellation conditions will apply. Servicing fees may apply.

My understanding if you wanted to add in stop overs on the JFK-LAX leg at say for aguments sake ORD and DFW you could do so for no cost, however if you then added the same stop overs on the next leg, you would incur the charges.
AFAIK I know if you are in LAX for less than 24 hours it is not a stop over, but a transit.
