Flying from LHR TO SYD in DECEMBER and want stop in Dubai for a few days. Dubai will be hosting COP 28
Not sure if it’s a good idea as security will be tight and will it be crowded? Any thoughts?

Maybe there won't be protests or as bad as in other places, but the climate change conferences, in other parts of the world can bring out the worst in people.
Ie, in ADL, they have stuck themselves to the road, in protest about fossil fuels still being mined.
As Dubai and the area is a major oil producer, maybe avoid, or as soon as you land, go outside the UAE, for this trip.
They would probably be tight security wise, as its a "hot" topic, not weather wise, more so what can be prepared/possibly forseeen.
But in the end, none of us have a crystal ball that can fortell the future.
Who knows, it could even be a tame meeting of world leaders.

Accommodation will be at an eye-watering cost (its pretty steep as a matter of course). And at the last COP, even people with hotel bookings, paid in advance, were summarily told to pay a new, much higher rate, or booking will be cancelled.

I dare say airfares may be expensive, too.

Security? They do security pretty well - as in "do as I say - look at the gun I'm pointing at you".

I don't mind Dubai, but I'd avoid it like the plague at this time.

Though there was that guy Peter Tatchell who went so far as to protest during the world cup, but of course, yup, he did get nabbed.

Airfares normal price for J at the moment and Hotels to. Thinking of organising transport to Abu Dhabi and spending our stopover there.

Do it and don’t worry.

The COP delegates? (whatever they’re called for this particular gab fest) will stay in some climate controlled luxury hotel; be transported everywhere in large climate controlled vehicles; and meet in large climate controlled event spaces / ballrooms. You probably won’t interact with them in any way, unless there are some road closures.

I’m sure their discussions will save the planet.
