Hi. Flying back from Europe in late Sept and have an 11 hour layover in BKK, arrive on AY29 at 0715 and depart on QF24 at 1825 all J class.
I am tossing whether just to book the Novotel at the Airport (currently $125) from the previous thread advice (breakfast, bit of a swim, nap, general lay about)

or tough it out and head downtown for a bit of a look around as I have never been in Bangkok.

Any advice greatly appreciated

I've got a similar stop coming up (in at 7am from CMB and out at nearly midnight for AMM). Search google for some "airport hotels" that actually aren't at the airport. You can get a day room for about $35-40 and they usually include a one way airport transfer.

My plan is to sleep until about 1 and then head out for a late lunch/early dinner before returning to the airport.

At that time of the morning you could be in downtown BKK in about 45 mins, and you could get around quite easily once you are there with their impressive skytrains. You'd have time to get to the Grand Palace if you wanted too, it is a very popular tourist destination. If you want rest though, BKK is not the city for that. So if you think you'll be tired, get a room and rest. I like the Novotel at BKK, but you won't experience anything that is real BKK.

The Convenient resort in Ladkrabang has complimentary transfers from/to airport, 2 bottles of water and is priced at ~AUD/20. If you want breakfast for 2 the rate is then ~AUD30/night.

The hotel it nothing special, rooms are big although a little dated, bed is quite OK and it is in a quiet area.

I have stayed there a number of times and I would not hesitate to stay again.

I presume you will have checked luggage through to final destination. Keep backpack or similar and train from airport to downtown Bangkok. It is cheap and fast. Return same way. I wouldn't want to sleep during the day and would take opportunity to experience the city, albeit for half a day.
