Two Jetstar planes missed Sydney's landing curfew on Sunday, delaying passengers overnight and prompting the cancellation of another flight.

Passengers had to be accommodated in hotels overnight not only in Geelong but also on the Gold Coast, The Australian reported, as the delays led to the cancellation of an early-morning flight from Sydney to Hamilton Island.

The problems reportedly started when a mechanical fault in one of the carrier's Airbus A320 aircraft caused a delay that progressively worsened throughout Sunday.

As a result, flights from Avalon airport, near Geelong, and the Gold Coast were cancelled, because they were unable to reach Sydney before the airport's 11pm landing curfew. - Travelpress travel news

Funny how this is considered news-worthy, while the same thing happened to me a while back on QF but it never made any media content (beyond a trip report on FT). In my case it was a dead 767 that caused a delayed departure from BNE to SYD. We actually flew all the way to SYD and commenced final approach when it became clear we were going to be 1 min late for curfew and climbed out and back to BNE. At least this JQ event seems to have left the aircraft on the ground at AVV and OOL and not attempted to beat the clock.

The curfew is what I find crazy. Many residents around the airport had not built there when the airport was established. Given that there have been many developments in the industry resulting in noisy aircraft, I reckon that it is crazy to interfere with transport and commerce in this way. Unless there was a howling southerly late aircraft could land on 34L at night only disturbing the yet to be built desalination palnt and a few people at Kurnell.

In my example, we had already made most of the arrivals noise as we actually got down to below 500 ft before spooling up the noise-makers and powering back into the darkness for an hour flight back to BNE. So for the matter of being less than a minute after curfew, and having already made the nose, we made even more noise, burned lots more kero and annoyed a lot of passengers. I was just thankful to be sitting in the comfy section of the aircraft at the time.

And many have moved in subsequently. Its an archaic system and probably not removed because the pollies are scared they might lose a few votes.

Yes poor old Deathstar is getting a beating and seems to be having one of those weeks. I am surprised the birdstrike at Mackay on Saturday and 2 hr delay for the corresponding flight out of HTI has not been raised yet as another example of their bad service. Not that they did anything wrong in this case and I am all for aircraft being delayed to ensure all is OK before flying passengers around - just surprised some journo hasn't tried to beat this up too.

As for the curfew - I agree it is a joke with modern aircraft not being allowed to land 1 min late especially on 34.

Sydney is chockas, and finding a reasonable place to live close to the city, for those unfortunate enough not to live on the beautiful far north coast, is tough. For many Sydneysiders, the only respite they get, from the constant overhead roaring, is in the wee small hours.

Anyway no government would be stupid enough to face the anti-social backlash, (it would become personal, if people are kept awake every night, more so than just lost votes) if they tried to remove the curfew.

Well I'm sure NSW Governments is stupid enough it just doesnt have the guts to make tough decisions - the very same government was stupid enough to take out exhaust stacks from the M5 tunnel design to save a few votes and look how fantastic the air quality is there now.

I dont live on the far north coast - just dont have a need to be close to the shire and thus get maybe 2-3 planes per day. But then I chose not to live close to the airport - its all about choices.

I have no sympathy for anyone that moves close the airport - they have to accept airport noise just as I accept a 50min train ride to work.

As you say, its all about choices. My choice was to avoid both airport nose and a 50 min commute to the office. My commute is more like 50 paces . No trains apart from those a 2yo pushes along the floor.

IIRC, curfew at SYD used to be 10 pm. Maybe some "creep" would be sensible rather than outright removal.

Did I say sensible? I must have forgotten that governments were involved.

Not really worried about late night departures or landings but I do object to aircraft landing at 5:00am especially when I have had a long night at work and have only been sleeping for a few hours.

I live around 10-12 kms from airport, have been there over 30 years, was never under the flight path until a certain government came into power and I am not interested in sharing the flight path load. As usual YMMV and my thoughts and/or expectations are very reasonable.

I think it's hard for people who have lived there for 30 years like you John as traffic wouldnt have been as bad back then. I guess though its similar to people live on the Princes Highway which has seen a dramtic increase in usage over a similar period. Its the cost of progress sadly. We all though benefit from the "cost" of progress as well.

The curfew is a joke, as there are plenty of planes landing all night, they just dont carry apssengers on RPT flights, including BA146 aircraft and the like.
