No doubt a few here share a passion for steam along with flying.

My young son (almost 3) is fascinated with trains, trams and even the bus! Thankfully he also appreciates the many trips to the airport dropping me off and picking me up.

So, I'm trying to find trains and steam in particular but I'm sure any train would be wondrous for him... Google helps but I get the sense that the steam community is already pretty well connected and doesn't need fancy websites and social media (eg. Members might share an email or even hardcopy newsletter).

Any suggestions ? We're CBR based.

If you can wait it out, there'll no doubt be another AFF train trip later this year put on by a very generous member who owns his own carriage, and parks it at CBR.

Start him young, on his own train (!); A multi-skilled hobby that will last him a lifetime!

3 seems as good an age as any to get interested. :D

I'm sure we can find a few things for a young train enthusiast.

Yes there is Dick's railway at Gundaroo with steam operated there by the Canberra Society of Model Engineers 3 or 4 times per year plus their own track at Kingston (although they are moving), a visit to Goulburn workshops where there is presently a steam loco stripped down pending rebuild plus a bunch of diesel electrics of course.

Depending on how flexible you are with times we'll have to get the little 'un up in the cab for a ride.

Matt

I didn't know but Melbourne was running steam trains for the Good Friday Appeal.

I would love to have a few beers on the BAM if Matt puts it on again this year and meet a bunch of like-minded frequent travelers... but I don't think you all would want the little guy underfoot.

Now, meeting the BAM at Kingston and taking up Matt's very kind offer of getting him in the cab would be brilliant.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm sure we were all "little guys" once.

So the young lad is interested in steam trains and the family has at least one frequent flyer? Sounds like you need to visit the Mallard in York.

And yes you can sit in the driver's seat. I did.

The National Rail Museum in York is fascinating with trains and accessories from the very beginning of rail travel to current day.
