Status run! I must be mad! In a huge rush to retain my Silver status with QF I never stopped to think is this really worth the effort and cost. Does Being a Silver FF actual hold any value? Am I really kidding myself that being a Silver FF will actually help in my efforts to upgrade using award points on International flights? Flight from MEL to BNE today and then a 4 hour stay at QP then back to MEL all in the name of status chasing.

Hi there,

If its any consolation I am doing the same thing but worse, 4 flights one day to go from Silver to Gold. Also have asked myself the same questions.
Is it worth it? I think so. Happy flying and silver status :)

Wait until you decide to go for Platinum. :p

That really is worth it when you travel overseas. Starting with the F lounge at MEL and SYD.

Yep PS does plenty on AA. Free checked bag, F check in, priority AAcess. So much better than being PS on AF and flying DL.

If u want o keep your silver status go for it... I can see benefit when overseas with a bit OW cred.Domestically no real benefit if your a qp member anyway...I mainly do domestic flights and only started to see some benefits when I got gold...

You do realise that you are asking a bias audience here and it definately won't represent 'normal' Australia.

I'd say, just enjoy your flights :)

Are you implying I am not normal?

Just kidding....

I'm a Silver and have been for the last 2 years. Mine expires in October and I'm not close to having the SC's to retain and don't plan to either. During those years I've only really done domestic flights with Qantas and there were only 2 real benefits. More air miles for each flight. Check-in option at the QC or Business Desk.

This last benefit often isn't one. Firstly, I've been told at the Business check-in at Sydney that I'm not entitled to check-in there just because they have a little sign up saying "Gold and Platinum". I always argued that it was against the Terms and Conditions of Silver membership. The other thing is that it was often so much slower to check-in using those desks anyway because those in line were often changing their flight bookings. Economy moved quicker and hardly anyone changes and there are more people on the desks.

Next year I'm aiming for Gold for the first time as I know I have some AA flights. I didn't even think it was worth the effort of getting to Silver to avoid getting 100 points less for Gold next year as I need more than 100 to retain Silver this one.

Just my thoughts.

At Sydney you cannot use the Gold/Plat line, as its clearly mentioned in the terms:

"You can check in at Q Card Reader, Qantas Club counters or Premium Economy counters (or Business where not available). "

Until NGCI was installed the QC line was next to the Gold Plat line! It was also not unusual to get quicker service in the Y line in preference to those in the priority line.

I think that you used to be able to but, in any case, Silver members are no longer allowed to use QC or Business for domestic flights. Unless you're travelling internationally Silver really isn't worth the effort as far as I can see.

The current situation is as quoted in that you can use the business line if QP or card readers are not in place, you were never able to use the business lines marked Gold/Plat at Sydney as there was always a QP line next door.
