Hi All,

First-time caller, long time listener...

I did a Oneworld RTW business class in Dec/Jan 2004 as a QF Gold member, and thought I because my journey began on 30 Dec, I would qualify to receive the more generous Status credit calculations so that I would reach Platinum when I was done. Turns out, QF only used that principle on my two flights that were before 1 January.

So now I need to pick up 260 by 31 August to reach Platinum. But this time it has to come out of my own pocket, so I'm hoping your wealth of experience will help me find the cheapest way to get them!

Thanks in advance

Mike

Some multi-stage red e-deals perhaps? SYD-MEL-PER will get you 30 for about $200 (IIRC).

Dave, isn't the problem both time and money? Your proposal would need to be undertaken 9 times at a cost of nearly $1,800. Is it really worth that much to get to platinum?

Admittedly the bonus would be that the points earned over the 1,000 minimum would get mdeggs 28.57% more points at the platinum level (I know there are the other access benefits but is there really a value or just something to boost self esteem?). I base this on the assumption that the class of flight remains the same. Therefore if a person were to acccrue 100,000 points p.a the added attraction would be to accrue nearly 30,000 points, or a trip from Sydney to Auckland in economy class. Is this worth the cost of a return economy flight to London?

It seems to me that the cost-benefit analysis would kick if mdeggs were to accrue 367k points in the year.

Anyway, it is always the flyer's call but I would think consideration needs to be given to the real cost of achieving this status.

From a lowly argentum.

Or another way of looking at a cost-benefit analysis of becoming a platinum member (and in the true tradition of QF FF boards) would you & 2 friends consume $1800 of alcohol in Qantas Clubs when you're not flying? :D Quite a few HP's.

At the moment the best deal seems to be SYD-MEL-SYD-MEL etc 13 returns for about $1700 (earning 26,000 or about $400 worth of points (net cost $1300) + time factor!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I myself would not do it. I might attempt it later this year, I will probably fall about 150 SC's short of requalifying for Gold, and when you consider the cost of QP membership (which I will not have to pay for another 12 months) and then extend the lounge access to other OW carriers, it will make sense for me to do a mileage run.

But I can't see the sense to do so from Gold to Plat.

All I was doing was answering the OP's question.
