My status credit balance is sitting on a big 0 as we speak. I've got a few upcoming flights that will bump them up shortly:

September: 240 SC's
November: 240 SC's

Now, 480 is enough to get me to silver, however my points expiry date is 31th October.

Does that mean the 240 points I earn in Sep will expire after a month and hence won't combine with the Nov points to get me all the way up to.... Silver? Does the same apply for the 5000 point loyalty bonus?

You are correct, the at the end of October, the annual count will be reset to zero, and you will start again, hence no silver.

However, for the purposes of the loyalty bonus the count is not reset, so you will get these points.
