In a word yes.

I have travelled on JAL domestic J several times and they have always credited properly.

I book an economy ticket and then upgrade for 1,000 Yen. Much cheaper than booking J.

Did you upgrade at the airport or when you book (like the AA instant upgrade fare?)

At the airport when I went to check in. I was always early so increased my chances.

However, on my last NRT-CTS trip there was a general call to pax asking if they wanted to pay to upgrade. Several did. :)

I've done this a few times, but always upgraded when booking. $10-13 for a J seat and J status credits is awesome!
