Hi
First world problems but I have 4,000,000 points but am only bronze.
I’m trying obtain Gold to spend these points easier and am flying Gold Coast to Santiago return in business.
On the Qantas Status calculator if I put in OOL/SYD/SCL/SYD/OOL it comes up with 390 status credits. The flight goes via Auckland on the way back and I can book it in multi-city as separate segments (for only $150 more) OOL/SYD/SCL/AKL/SYD/OOL and it up with 465 SC. A couple of questions-
1. If I just book it as OOL/SCL return will I only earn the lower SC?
2. If I book it as separate segments will I get the higher SC earn?
Thanks for your help.

3. As I will reach 300 SC and Silver as I hit Auckland will the next two segments AKL/SYD/OOL have the 50% SC Silver earn bonus?
Thanks for your help.

I don't profess to be the greatest expert on these matters but I believe:
  • Your SC earn will reflect the segments shown in the booking
  • The 50% bonus for Silver is on points not SC and
  • Your status will update from the end of the segment
BTW, you should really post this in the Qantas section where all the true experts reside. Anyway, hope this helps. Cheers,
Mike

YMMV.

Depends on many things. According to the T&C, the definition of flight is:

'Flight' means one way travel (without a Stopover) on a scheduled air service with a single flight number"

If you simply use the multi-sector to book separate segments, and there is no stop-over, then the definition of Flight should mean that you still earn the 390.

However, in practice it depends if QF have upgraded their systems. If you book the return directly, then you will have a single segment in your ticket. If you use multi-city, you may or may not (depending on what they have done) end up with a single segment, or it may actually book the two segments into the ticket. Note that simply seeing a pricing change (which would tend to indicate two segments) does not mean that it will end up actually booking that (or charging you that amount) as the QF online booking has a bit of a glitch that means that after it constructs and quotes you something, once you actually hit "book" to pay for it - the whole thing gets handed off to another section of the system, which may put it together differently (with a different price). If that happened, you get a magic 8xx_ type error, and can't get the booking done online.

If you do end up with the two segments (either because the booking engine allows it, or you use a TA who forces it in), then you end up waiting to see if QF simply credit each segment separately (and you win with the higher SC), or they have made changes and recognise that the two segments are really one "flight" and credit you accordingly.

My direct experience on this is over 15 years ago (and much has changed), where a booking BNE-SIN-FRA (made as a single flight number) was split and re-ticketed to separate segments (so that an upgrade could be applied to SIN-FRA because different metal - although same flight number, meant 2 class to SIN, and then change a/c for a 3 class to FRA - this was before PE). The two segments did indeed post the individual SC, rather than the end to end, but this was both a long time ago, and also likely complicated because one stayed in the base class, and the other had a points upgrade applied to it - so whilst crediting at the base business rate still, was a different booking class.

Now if you took a stopover in AKL, and spent > 24 hours, then your extra SC would be guaranteed.

You need separate flight numbers to earn each segment separately and indeed you’ll typically pick up some extra SCs if that’s the case with many routings. If booked on the one flight number even with the stop you only get the “end to end” SCs. So if it is booked SCL-AKL then AKL-SYD with different flight numbers, then you’ll earn the extra SCs.

Note however this doesn’t always apply eg. MEL-SIN-LHR (QF35/QF1) earns same SC as MEL-LHR (QF9).
