After ticking over to the QFF gold, they kindly started to send me a "your exclusive Gold newsletter". Among all the usual stuff, there was this little intriguing box which sounded surprising: with a return flight every three weeks (on average), I'd be in the top 20% of the SG's. This can't be true, I don't have my bum on the seat that often at all to deserve such percentage.

This naturally raises the question about the typical flight patterns at this level and across all levels. SG can be achieved with one, two, or perhaps three well placed overseas trips if they are ticketed above the Y sales fares and/or use DSC offers.

Are there any stats - or even good guesswork - available on the flight patterns across FF levels? In this case, how many SG's would have achieved or maintained it with max three longer trips, how many have done it the hard way doing 30 or 35 short return hops gaining 10+10 SC each? What would the bell curve look like?

The really frequent travellers would be in Platinum, so you need to compare yourself to those that do enough to make gold, but not enough to make platinum.

Not sure it will be a normal bell curve, more a skewed type of curve.

First data point for you:
15 years business travel approx 15 x QFd, with 1-2 x QFi per year all in Y. Would get 600-800 SCs per year, so reach SG level (just).
Last year, a change of role to approx 8-10 x QFi (mostly Asia Pac with occasional US) again all in Y. With the help of a couple of DSCs made WP for the first time.
I think I'll have to be lucky with DSCs to keep WP so enjoying the frills but not getting too used them!
There's also the Lifetime SG carrot - 11,390 and counting.......
BTW, the most frustrating thing is my partner travels infrequently, but 1 x J class trip to Europe and she hits SG

Your previous pattern sounds very familiar... And your partner's 1 x J is something I was thinking as the other end: a well placed (and paid) single trip and you're good.

There is a variety of flight patterns for FF. Some (as the above posts indicate) gain and retain status with lots of Y flights. Others do this with less regular J (and F) flights.

So I not too sure if there is a overall pattern.
