Starwood plans global expansion for Sheraton | theage.com.au

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide on Monday announced a global expansion of the Sheraton chain, its largest brand.

Starwood said Sheraton Hotels & Resorts would open 54 new hotels and add 20,000 new rooms by next year. Sheraton currently has 406 hotels and resorts in 71 countries.

The growth plan will include a $US2 billion investment in new hotels in North America in an effort to revitalize the brand.

This year, Starwood said, Sheraton will open a hotel every 12 days, in locations including Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis, Phoenix and Washington, as well as Ireland, Argentina, Egypt and China.

Does Starwood have a decent presence in Australia?

It would not appear that any of the new hotels are planned for Australia.

Not a huge presence, 9 properties.

Westin: Mel, Syd
Sheraton: Syd, Per, Gold Coast, Noosa, Cairns
Four Points: Syd, Geelong

and planned:
Westin Brisbane
aloft Sydney Airport

Lost in last few years:
Sheraton Brisbane (now Sofitel)
W Sydney (now Blue - Taj Hotels)

Sheraton Melbourne (now Langham)
Four Points Port Macquarie

Also Le Meridien Melbourne (now the Rialto Hotel, and soon to be an IC). Though it left Le Meridien before the brand was integrated into Starwood, me thinks.

and a new one slated for MEL (and a Hilton resort in Yarra Valley).

Is it safe to assume that accommodation for SPG hotels in Australia would be considered expensive by most people?

I am not being critical just looking for alternatives to PC or Hilton.

Some rates from memory:

Westin Melbourne - $280-$350
Four Points Geelong - $150
Sheraton Sydney - $250-$300ish
Westin Sydney - $350ish
Four Points Sydney - $200ish (but can get really cheap during winter - paid $180 for a 2 night stay once with a 20% discount promo applied)
