Hi all
I received last night an invitation to get Starwood Gold status if I have one stay in an SPG hotel before (I think) the end of November. You have to register to get it.
The Gold status is only valid until 28 Feb 2008 though (I think) - just wondering if it is worth switching out one stay in HKG or NRT (at the airport) to an SPG hotel. Not sure I will manage to retain Gold and their redemption rates are horrible...
Cheers

P.s. Details at home so can post later if needed

I'd suggest trying out SPG in a city with better properties/more central locations.

The SPGs in NRT are pretty ho hum - 80s looking and one of the LMs look like Marie Antoinette had decorated it herself. And unless you want to be in Kowloon or near Stanley Market, the 2 SPGs in HKG are in rather awkward locations even though I'm personally fond of the LM Cyberport.

I would only be doing it for status and it would be only one night so not really bothered on hotel quality ;)

ALthough I wouldnt go back to the W on lexington ;)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Is it worth it to Feb-08?

SPG Gold for upgrades is pretty low %ge, particularly in the US where a lot of programs still offer comp gold.

Some decent Gold treatment in the Asian hotels

If staying 1 more night gives you gold, then i'd do it......mainly because SPG would give you status (which is what you want) for the upcoming months and the additional benefits that comes with it.......

The gold status may come in very handy esp when SPG offers has promotions and you may book the cheapest room and get comp upgrade, just like when I stayed at Sheraton Waikiki :) paid for the cheapest available room which has no views to be comped to the ocean view room =) on PG levels!

Go W at Union Sq.
And check out the Lychee Martinis at its Living Room. :D
Word.

simongr - if you do go for it, I wonder if you can sign up for this one too?

(Double stays or double points).

I'm on 8 stays this year, and with this double stay offer (starts 1/9) I only need one more stay, which I'll easily do on my upcoming US trip (thinking the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco). That'll make me Gold in just 6 stays, or 11 nights. Not bad going. :) (The first 3 stays were on a double stay promo, so I got 6 stays from 3 nights!)

SPG status lasts a calendar year right? ie: If I reach SPG Gold in November 2007, it lasts until 31 Dec 2008?

Cheers,
- Febs.

Just to clarify an additonal bonus with the Q4 offer: if you chose double stays, you actually get double stays AND double nights, according to the SPG FT board. Seems to good to be true!

That was my understanding, but my new platinum card is valid until February, 2009 which may explain why Simongr's offer lasts until Feb 2008. Sort of like an AA candy theft, really (not that I know anything about that).:D

Too good to be true would be having a 2nights stay crediting as 18 nights due to a bill query taking 2wks to sort out, and the bill only being processed at the end

Makes the renewal of Gold very easy... Now if only it was 55 nights..

Great hotel - we put all our out-of-towners there.

Not only is the hotel better than the W-Lex, but the Union Sq/Gramercy/Village neighborhood has more character than midtown.
