hi,

looking at a Starclass flight shortly, interested to hear opinions on the service, seats, food, IFE, overall mood and any issues one should be aware of? I understand full points and SC apply - which on the face of it are quite attractive.:?:

Cheers SPRUCE:mrgreen:

IMO Starclass is more like premium economy seating with service/food/etc of QF economy...

The J points/SC's are the best thing going for it.

Flew OOL-KIX with an ODU on starclass yesterday. It was great value for $50 ($200ish ticket + 299 upgrade) - more like premium economy than international business. Everything about it is a big step up from the regular J* service but a fair bit less than a full international business class offer.

IFE is pretty average (a portable unit with not much worth watching on it). The food is about international economy standard although the deserts are better.

I would describe it as great value rather than a great product.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Dazz81 Planes and Travel Blog: Jetstar Starclass - Bangkok to Melbourne

I think they should stop calling it ' Jetstar's International BUSINESS Class ' because it is definitely a premium economy product at best. But you are quite right about the SC's and FF points being a great bonus. And it is certainly a big big step up from JQ Y.

Definitely worth the price I paid for an ODU as long as you get a cheapie ticket originally. Also probably worth if if you get it on sale, I would not pay the full fare for this service though.... but plenty of others do...

I've flown quite a few times SYD-HNL and vv. in StarClass. I agree that it's more of a premium economy product than business, so that's a good point to base your expectations.

In my experience, the cabin crew provide good friendly service, although I've never tested them with any difficult requests. However, on one occasion, they failed to deal with passengers standing in the aisle and having a conversation so loud that they woke up the whole cabin (including me, and I had earplugs in and was also wearing noise-cancelling headphones); they did respond after I pressed my call button, but I felt that they should have intervened without needing to be asked.

The seats are okay, but nothing special. I found that the PE seats on the QF A380 are better, although not leather. The footrest on *C wasn't much use for me (I'm 6' tall), while I found the PE on QF much better.

The food was okay, but I think it may be the same meals you can pay for down the back, although I think the dessert service (cheesecake, etc.) was just for *C.

IFE are individual digiplayers - not a huge selection, and the units themselves seem quite tired. They come with noise-cancelling headphones, which work, but again aren't fantastic.

The only issues I've encountered have been to do with noisy passengers (see above), and occasional very long delays, although the passengers down the back had the same delay. ;) (We were 4 hours late leaving Sydney one time, and on other occasions have been 30-60 minutes late.)

For me, the real benefit of *C is as a cheap-ish way of getting SCs, and as a way to get halfway across the Pacific in better-than-economy seating but without paying too much.

Wash your mouth out! If it is not called "business" you can't get buisness SC and points.

Sorry, the orginal post should have said $500! not $50 but that should be obvious from the maths.

I asked at the counter at OOL and they said the price was $299 so i took it for two of us. Star Class was only about 1/4 full despite the Y section looking pretty packed. I also got pretty much the cheapest ticket for the original Y fare so that wasn't a factor.

No need to ring in advance. Other threads have said they need to call you the other way as it is illegal to sell ODU's in Japan. i will investigate that on the way back. QF status was no use to me - i'm still red on QF.

I've flown starclass Melbourne to Bangkok a few times, the most recent being arriving back to Aus yesterday.
The best thing about it is the Qantas FF points and status credits at business class rates. (this particular trip benefited from the 'double points' promotion too!)
The service is quite good, IFE is ok to pass a few hours but fairly limited in choice, food is ok... in short, nothing spectacular but quite comfortable for long hauls.

Comfortable, unless the guy infront of you reclines his seat fully while you're trying to type on your laptop. In that case you'll end up with your laptop wedged against your stomach.

I agree with Sprucegoose:

So are you entitled to J points and SC if you opt for the ODU? Or do you only get them paying full JQ Star class fare?....

They called me here in Osaka about halfway though my stay and offered upgrade to J for A$249.00. We grabbed it, along with getting a promo fare for J on the way over it was a good deal. Not sure about the QF status.

welcome to AFF flycop

Strictly speaking one is not entitled to points, J cabin bonus or J SC's for ODU (at the airport) however it has been reported that some who have gone through this method do receive points, bonuses and SCs; mind you some required haggling QF for them whilst others got them automatically. This is clearly a YMMV situation.

However there are those who have been contacted by JQ 24 or more hours prior to departure to see if they are interested in upgrading to StarClass for a cost, and these types of upgrades will get points, J cabin bonus and J SC's.

Flew JS *C SYD-HNL-SYD in November. First time with JS - so I can't compare/comment with down the back. As others have said, the seats are standard QANTAS domestic business class seats (with leather). Any of the bulkhead seats in the first row are very good for leg room and no one reclining in front of you. Food is OK, but certainly nothing special. The wine flowed very freely SYD-HNL (afternoon / o'night flight). IFE arrangment is bulky and not a hugh selection. There are movies and shows on the main screen also. The seats have power, so taking a personel DVD player or laptop is an alternative.

Other bonus are: QFF points and SC. 280 SC return, plus we managed to get the QFF double points JS bonus: As a QFF Plat, managed a total of 45k points return for $2000 sale fare.:D

They have dedicated check-in for SC, You also get QC access (and can use QF 1st Lounge for QFF Plat / OW Em).

Downside: Check-in doesn't open until 3hrs prior to departure, which curtailed some time in the 1st lounge (noting that boarding is 45mins prior). No no priority bag tags. We did seem to wait an eternity for luggage at both ends. Amentities kit is very basic. No pillow, but you get a blow-up thingy to go around you neck - but doesn't seem to work real well with the seat head-rest? They didn't hand out "Express" cards departures or arrivals back in Sydney - but it was pretty quiet on both occassions.

Overall, a reasonably comfortable option for a fraction of the price of full business class. For flights under 10hrs, it's not a bad option if you want something better than regular cattle class.
