Sri Lankan Airlines "culture of corruption"

We certainly had some interesting discussions with our Sri Lankan driver when we were over there in 2012. He had some strong opinions re HIA construction

Indeed there is. Merged.

I've got to admit, $2.3 billion for 10 aircraft seems overpriced. Neither article says what they bought?

Re: Inquiry finds massive corruption at Sri Lankan Airlines

Yet another Sri Lankan link to the issue Sri Lanka : Government inquiry finds shocking details of corruption at Sri Lanka national carrier

I suspect the airport construction at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport might have a few "under documented" payments. The article includes a number of more personal references to the activities of senior management.

As to the cost of airplane acquisitions, there have been a number of threads about the choices a large Australian airline  have made in airframe selections and costs, along with many pages of reasons why the writers' choices were (and are) better than the then (and current) airline management. Though in the Australian case no attribution to the finding of "kick-backs" have been made. Alas Sri Lankan business culture does have a tradition of "paying commiss" where there is a possibility of a choice of suppliers.

Nevertheless, UL is still a very good choice when traveling to Europe from SE Asia, from the viewpoint of the customer.

Happy wandering

Fred

I assume it's their recent orders for A333s to complement the old A332s they have. Nearly flew on one recently but planes broke and flights cancelled and IROPS was non-existent. Good fun!
Hard to speculate on the airframe cost but given their existing small fleet the purchase seems reasonable to me.

This inquiry is probably one of many to come pointing to widespread corruption during former prez Rajapaksa's admin though he alleges a political witch hunt.
