You'll need to call Qantas and book on the CX flights to/from SIN, BKK or HKG.
It will cost you 2½K assisted award booking fee.
I have done this. (Booked MEL-SYD-SIN-CMB)

Alternatively...
Option 1:
Maybe try Qantas SYD-BOM (currently 20% discount on points) Then Jet Airways to Colombo. From memory the connection would not be good, so maybe just purchase a one-way BOM-CMB flight on Kingfisher/Air India/Sri Lankan.
Option 2
You could also try via Delhi which has surprisingly good connections.
SYD-SIN 5.00pm-9.45pm Qantas
SIN-DEL 11.10pm-2.20am Jet Airways
DEL-CMB 6.40am-1.35pm Jet Airways
Option 3 (quickest)
PER-SIN Qantas 1.15am-5.50am
SIN-MAA (Chennai) Jet Airways 9.20am-11.00am
MAA-CMB Jet Airways 12.15pm - 1.35am. (Probably too tight, maybe purchase the $150 Sri Lankan airlines flight to CMB at 3.00pm)
