SQ Krisflyer Points Transfer Question

I am Silver SQ Krisflyer. 2 years back I paid for a trip to Euprope for my daughter and I joined her up as a member of Krisflyer. There are about 15000 points sitting in her account about to expire. How can I best use these points?

Ideally I'd like to transfer them to my account.

Alternatively could I transfer them to my Virgin Australia or Hilton HHonours account?

I don't suppose I can booked a reward partner flight (intra Europe return) use her points and pay the balance with mine?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Unfortunately Im pretty sure they dont allow you to transfer miles between Krisflyer accounts, not sure about transferring to other programs but I doubt they would allow it.
However you can renew/extend them for a few months (6 from memory), but you can only do this once and given the fee they charge it may not be worth it unless you have more miles coming in.
Your best bet to use em is to top it up or try and book a short distance one way trip on a partner airlines such as Lufthansa - 25k return and they allow one ways so you should be sweet.

The best option is to redeem them before they expire. You won't get much for 15K KF miles, but you can set yourself (or someone else) up as a nominee to fly the sectors. You might be able to find something short-haul which fits into your upcoming travel plans.


As Fatcat says, You can "extend" your miles (for a fee - although it is free for elites). This must be done before they expire.

with the 15% online discount.
Don't forget too that you can top up by buying miles,
if you already have at least 50% of the miles required for a particular redemption,
at USD40 per block of 1000 miles.

eg SIN-HKG o/w in J is 23,375 so you'd need to buy 6 blocks for USD240.

Unfortunately I disagree with your maths. 27,500 less discount is 23,375 miles. So you would need to buy 9 blocks for $360 to get from 15,000 up to 24,000 miles (unless I am missing something?).

Therefore you are suggesting that the OP could fly SIN-HKG in SQ J (on the 388) for $360 USD and $67.30 SGD tax & surcharges. e.g. ~$400 AUD ($415 ish with CC fees)

Using deluxeflyer's example you could fly from Zone 2 (Malaysia, Indonesia or Brunei) to Hong Kong for the same points and only a little more tax. This would give you 2 sectors in business, and presumably some good lounge time. You should be able to get the 388 between SIN and HKG.

However it is worth remembering that you are paying $400 to fly J on a route that LCCs regularly fly for ~$100 (e.g. TR, 3K, etc.).

The OP could also investigate using the miles on Virgin Australia or *A. However VA/DJ only allow whY redemptions, and the OP would only have enough miles for a one-way ticket. I doubt topping-up would be economical given VA/DJ within Australia and NZ/VA/DJ trans-tasman are so 'cheap' anyway. The other problem with a one way ticket is you would need to buy a one-way in the other direction.

You are quite right, I double counted the discount .

That makes the 15,000 miles worth say about AU$0.10 each.

Correct, but the comparison is purely academic.


Of course, if the OP has never flown J, flying KUL-SIN-HKG in J for $400 may seem like 'good value', especially with an A380 flight, and some good lounge time in SIN T3.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help.

Most of my redemtions so far have been intra Europe J class. It seems like the best value and most interesting locations (Your mileage may vary). Although at times the taxes paid on top of the points is almost as much as a discount flight with the same carrier. (eg LH has a lot of intra Europe fares for 99 Euro).

I think I'll do an open jaw to Europe, use my daughter's points to "close the jaw" with a one way economy flight then save my points for a later trip in J.
