Hi Everyone,

Apologies if this has already been posted before, but I just have a quick question regarding SQ Elite Status Qualification.

I recently joined SQ KrisFlyer in May 2010 and have done some travelling on SQ and MI in the last few months. I just achieved their Silver Status, but was shocked to learn now that I need a fresh new 50,000 elite miles to qualify for Gold. I would've thought as long as I've done 50,000 elite miles in one year I should qualify for their Gold Status, but it seems I now need to do 75,000 elite miles in my first year (25,000 for silver + another 50,000 miles after Silver) to achieve Gold.

Is this common with Star Alliance Airlines? I am WP with Qantas and think back many years ago when I first joined their Frequent Flyer, I went from Bronze to Gold in about 4 months after attaining 700 SCs. It didn't require me to earn 700 SCs after I achieve QF PS Status? Any thoughts? Should I have joined another Program instead of SQ KrisFlyer?

Thank you!

Cheers,

Mike79

Maybe you should look at Asiana Club. I heard they are very easy on getting Gold. Or also try Aegean Airlines, or BMI.

From the wording below, it seems as long as you get 50K miles you should become KF Gold. But the next paragraph mentioning what u were saying.

Singapore Airlines
Becoming a KrisFlyer Elite Gold Member

Your membership year will be the 12-month period from the date of your enrolment as a KrisFlyer member or upgrade to KrisFlyer Elite Silver status. During this time, you may qualify for KrisFlyer Elite Gold status by earning the required number of Elite miles.
KrisFlyer Elite Gold status will be yours when you achieve 50,000 Elite miles in any class of service on Singapore Airlines, SilkAir or any Star Alliance airline during your Elite Silver membership year, and credit them to your KrisFlyer account.

If you achieve an upgrade to KrisFlyer Elite Gold status, your Elite Gold membership year will begin on the date of your upgrade.

No, you'll just need to accrue 50,000 KF elite miles in your membership year (in your case before May 2011) to reach Gold. It's definitely not 25,000 + 50,000.

When your elite miles reach 50,000 in your membership year, you'll notice in when you log in to your KF account that your status would automatically be updated to Gold.

I'm assuming you were mis-informed by a call centre operator in an Asian sub-continent. ;)

If all you want is *A Gold and lounge access is paramount then Aegean would have been the one to join. OTOH if you intend to redeem your KF miles on SQ then KF is the way to go.

Thanks for the quick replies!!!

I've got more * Alliance trips in the coming months so I guess will soon find out whether it's 50,000 miles or 25,000 + 50,000 miles to get * Alliance Gold!

* Alliance lounge access would be nice - but I do miss the QF F Lounge in SYD. I had to settle for the QF Business Lounge for the last few times but nevertheless grateful I could still use the QF Lounge especially at SIN for a quick shower and a few drinks.

Cheers,

I'll be ready to say "I told you so" when you report back.
It's the most misunderstood aspect of KF !

I recently had reason to phone Singapore with a question about Silver status. The operator was quick to volunteer that only another 25,000 miles would get me into Gold Elite Status. If you download the pdf from their site "Make every journey count with Krisflyer" it is explained pretty simply.

You were misinformed.:)

Great thanks! Another 4500 miles to go and I will find out!

Onwards and upwards.:)

Having just completed a flight segment with *alliance that has taken me over 50,000 miles for year (actually 6 months), SQ Kris Flyer Gold Status was achieved after 24 hours nervous wait. :D

Very happy about this especially with QF removing the WP anytime lounge access, it would definitely provide more options when flying internationally.

Thank you again for the response!

Enjoy your new *A Gold status!

Well guys Im sorry but the true answer to that is the following:

If you achieve your upgrade to silver status (25 000 points) you will upgrade to Gold with an other 25 000 points if it is in the same membership year.

Let's say you became a member on the 1st of January 2010.

- On the 01 December 2010 you achieved 25 000 points, therefore you get your silver upgrade.

You have then an other month to get 25 000 points and upgrade to Gold.

BUT if you go past the 1st of January 2010 then you will need an other 50 000 points to upgrade to GOLD.

Does it make sense?

Currently at the basic level of Krisflyer. How do you find out your membership year to work out the cut off date to earn 50,000 points for gold?

If Star Alliance lounge access is your aim then you could always take out this membership linked below - might be cheaper than all those SQ flights; and you can obtain it straight away. ;)

Am I correct in thinking that $120 90-day membership will allow me into Star Alliance lounges anywhere in the world? Mayve I'm reading it wrong.

Have 12:05am depature out of Melbourne on SQ this next month and would really like to kill some time in the lounge!

To visit a Star Alliance lounge, other than Continental's Presidents Clubs and United's Red Carpet Clubs, you’ll need to present a same-day boarding pass for travel on any Star Alliance flight. You must show your US Airways Club Membership Card to enter United and Continental lounges.

90-day members will not get printed membership cards, but should access the club with a valid government-issued ID or with your membership number. 90-day club membership fees may be applied towards the purchase of an annual membership at any time during the 90 days. Memberships are non-transferable and non-refundable. Lifetime members can upgrade to the expanded membership for $60 a year. All US Airways Club rules apply.

Looks like you won't get a printed membership card, but your boarding pass should be sufficient.

I would still double check with US Airways first.

Lounge Access Policy - Star Alliance
Paid Lounge Membership Customers: Eligible Paid Lounge Membership Customers have access to any Star Alliance member carriers' owned Business Class lounges.
  • Eligible Paid Lounge Membership Customers include: United Airlines Red Carpet Club, US Airways Club, Air Canada Maple Leaf Club - Worldwide, and Continental Airlines Presidents Club.
  • Customer must present a valid eligible paid lounge membership card which displays the Star Alliance Lounge Logo

Ta, I've email US Airways to see what they say. What concerns me is: 90-day membership: Includes access to all US Airways Clubs. Yet the Annual membership says it included access to star alliance lounges.

My thoughts were correct, from US Airways customer service.

The US Airways 90 day trial club membership is only valid at US Airways club locations. All of our clubs are located in the continental US.

At $120 it would be worth it for me but buying an annual membership is a no go.

Cant see what the big deal is with SQ Gold. I fly regularly with SQ J and have access to the Kris Silver lounge. If I was flying Y I could get into the Kris Gold lounge which is pretty basic. Its a perception, but I reckon you would need to do a few return flights to the moon to get a decent award flight. I am I missing something?

As long as you aren't based or travel through SIN too often, it's not a big problem. And if you compare the price to, say, a Qantas Club membership, you'll be laughing.
