Schedule Changes Boost Capacity On Regional And South West Pacific Routes
3 April 2008

Singapore Airlines will be making some adjustments to its schedules in response to changing patterns in demand for travel. The adjustments will reallocate capacity among the routes and result in an increase overall across the network.

There will be more flights to and from Australia. From 3 April, Brisbane will be served with an additional three weekly frequencies, increasing to three times daily in July. Further, flights to Sydney increase from April to 24 times weekly, and will further increase to four times daily in June.

Some increases are planned for destinations in India, subject to traffic rights and regulatory approval.

Frequency between Singapore and Delhi are also planned to increase from a daily service to nine times weekly from 30 March, and to twice daily services later in the year.

The Airline had recently commenced a second daily service between Singapore and Zurich, and earlier this year, increased frequency on the Milan and Barcelona route to a daily service.

Source: Singapore Airlines Limited

The main benefits are:

Brisbane will increase to 17 weekly services (up from 14) immediately and return to triple daily (21 services per week) from 2nd July. Looks like it'll be operated by the 772's (Regional config)

Sydney increases to 24 services per week (up from 21) on 8 April and become quadruple daily from 1 June. The Sydney service will be 1 X A380, 1 X 77W and 2 X 744's.

Auckland increases from 11 regular services per week (14 seasonally) to a double daily service effective immediately.

The combination of the new A380's and the suspension of some it's Asian services and Taipei - LAX have allowed for this.

Here's a link to the article:And no, MEL is not mentioned - probably reducing services there.
MEL is still 3xweekly and going strong, in fact a little bird once mentioned that it's in line for a certain fat birdie. ;)

The capacity boost is achieved by the suspension of BKKKIX and the phased termination of TPELAX - taipeiflyer is still in mourning as TPELAX is the only route that he ever flies. The guy is thinking of a RTW or a circle pacific now.

Yeah too strong, so much so that as I entered the gate yesterday morning at SIN too find that the scheduled 77W to MEL (with its new J class) had been replaced by a 744 :( At least it wasn't an older 777-300. Not surprised as seat counter had shown 0 in all classes for the last week.

That's because the 77Ws have been going tech all over the place, and there aren't many of them around so substitutions have to occur. This is especially after the commencement of the IAH route. Alas MEL (SQ217/218) and HKG (SQ861/862) are frequent 'victims' of the substitutions. We've had lots of angry posts on SQTalk about people finding their 77W has turned into a regional plane on the MEL route, especially when it's the red eye.

I wouldn't have been surprised if this sub was more loading driven than going tech, as all classes were showing 0 on the SIN-MEL sector for some time, and F was only class not showing 0 for MEL-SIN on the return. I suspect the flight was way oversold. At least we got a 744, so that wasn't a regional plane and it did have spacebed seats - which are more than adequate for a day flight (and except for lack of direct aisle access, some argue are more comfortable for sitting up in than 77W, although I do like the space in the 77Ws).

Sorry to go off topic but if the market demand is so strong for travel to SIN from the east coast of Australia why doesn't QF add extra services to SIN/BKK?

I think QF services to/from SIN/BKK that do not continue on to LHR and arrive in SIN/BKK earlier in the day would be very popular and profitable. And no, JQ is not the answer....

I think a good proportion of traffic on the SQ flights consist of pax connecting to/from elsewhere. Huge 6th freedom operation via SIN, particularly on the Kangaroo and Indian routes. QF has a lucrative codeshare gig to India via SIN with Jet I believe.

On carriage is the key, with QF's "secondary" ports in Asia (eg BOM, MNL, BKK, PEK) serviced mainly via SYD, I (and probably others not originating from SYD) much prefer transitting SIN than SYD.

As QF009 points out India and Europe are key markets that have a suite of options on SQ (and even from SYD I am sure transitting SIN is preferable than transitting BOM or LHR respectively).

Personally I've transitted SIN to get to Thailand, Philippines, China, Japan, Malaysia, India, Europe, Vietnam ... plenty of options (even South Africa isn't that much extra time).

I often wondered why QF don't make it easier for pax to transfer to JQ services at SIN, but with high loadings, they don't really need to .... and wouldn't want to upset the tiger. They more they do with SIN, the more weight it might add to SQ's case for accessing SYD-LAX.

Just go for the upstairs exit row, or a downstairs bulkhead seat and this won't be a problem.
