I’ve twice recently purchased Singapore Airlines’ Flexi business class fares (J class), with the expectation I may need to change a flight date, and was surprised to discover how limited the flexibility is when requesting a flight date change.
To change a flight date without repricing, there needs to be availability in the exact same booking class (in this case, J). If that specific fare bucket isn’t available, you can either pay the fare difference to upgrade to a higher available fare class, or wait for J class availability, as you cannot downgrade to a lower fare class—even if lower-priced business seats are available (which would, in theory, entitle you to a refund, and is therefore not allowed).
I'm thinking I need to revise my booking strategy. Rather than paying a premium for a Flexi fare on the assumption that it will provide date change flexibility, it may be more pragmatic to book the lowest available fare class, and if a change is needed, pay the fare difference as required.
Has anyone else encountered problems in this area? My issue is the labelling of these tickets as “Flexi” when, in practice, flexibility is limited, and a cheaper ticket may actually enable more flexibility (at additional cost when making the change).
