I am no longer an Amex holder but the signs amused me nonetheless.

I always love at a restaurant when the bill comes in an Amex folder, and they return your Amex saying not accepted.....

That is a possibility but, without an Amex, I can't test the theory.

I did that once with my dentist who I knew took Amex but always denied it. The poor receptionist had to call 'the boss' before she would take my card.

many eftpos machines have the amex logo(along with visa and MasterCard) yet merchant says they dont take amex

The main perpetrator of this is the CBA tablet machine that displays all the logos irrespective of whether the merchant accepts them or not.

I think it is configurable, I'm certain I've seen those tablet machines without the AmEx logo, but it just seems to display everything by default no matter if it's accepted or not. Which is infuriating for the end-user on top of the accessibility issues with those units.
