Morning all

Does anybody know if their are any sports bars located at Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport. It looks like I will be in transit there at the time the AFL grand final is on and was hoping they might have a sports bar that might show the game. Have tried looking online but can't find anything, so was hoping somebody here who has passed through the airport may have noticed a place either airside of landside.

thanks heaps

Keep an eye on this thread and I shall scout around when I am there in June and post back details.

There is another AFFer there this week and Anat0l will also be there end of May so they could possibly scout around and post back details.

I'm scheduled to be there 2nd week of May so I'll have a look around as well. Do you know which Terminal you'll be arriving/departing from?

Sorry not sure which terminal I am arriving and departing at. I am flying in on Jetstar from Singapore and departing Cathay later on in the night.

Thanks for looking out for me.

I'm sorry, I believe your chances are buckleys to none.

I'm not being negative; once you've seen the Taipei airport, you'll understand. Similarly all the local airport hotels can be forgotten. It's hard enough to get anyone to understand your name. Forget about staying there for any layover under 10 hrs IMHO.

Make sure your (city) hotel has internet, and watch or listen online.

If, coincidentally, your plane arrives at the same time as the final, then hook up with the expats; it's easy to find those online.

As someone who has been to Taipei on a monthly basis until recently I have to agree with you, however I suspect you have not had the pleasure of the Novotel at the airport which is a recent addition, while generally the hotels near the airport are a waste of time for sports bars (as is most of Taiwan) the Novotel is a bit different in that it has three bars, if you exclude the pool bar then you have the regal bar (exec lounge) or lobby bar both with two TVs.

The Novotel also has free WIFI in the rooms and lobby, worst case scenario is watch online in the bar :)

Thanks markis10 for the correction. It's true, I haven't had the pleasure of visiting the Novotel; it sounds like the hotel best suited for the OP.

Things change quickly in Taiwan, which is both good and bad, had a few cab trips where the driver and I were going to different places even though the concierge had tried to communicate with the driver ;).

I absolutely love Taiwan, for me its changing too quickly and will soon be no longer the undiscovered tourist destination it currently is, in many ways the Novotel at the airport is a sign of that with its heavy western influences and the possibility of a conversation with the staff in English that makes sense. If that makes a footy fan happy so be it, closer to the day the AFL publishes a list of locations that are showing the game OS!

Just left the Taoyuan Novotel yesterday and am heading back later this week.

I agree that Taoyuan Airport is pretty limited, but I found the Novotel to be outstanding, pretty much the best Novotel I've been to. Pretty reasonably priced too, and I believe they have day rates.

Will see what the sports viewing options are when we're next back (there were enough movies to keep us happy). But free WiFi to every room was great, and certainly provides an alternative for following the game (guess it depends who's playing though).

Have to disagree with the language issue - over a few days, we had no problems whatsoever in Taipei. Maybe we were lucky.

Flew into TPE on May 9 and out again May 12. Bang4Buck is right - there isn't much there! Airside in Terminal 1 there's a small OW Lounge which gets fairly crowded, otherwise you'd be better off outside.
