So I made up an account for the +1 so when there was a promo on we could buy more points. I'm hoping for something between now and December.
Given you need a stay with them once a yr to keep the account active, just wondering what others do, do you just make up an account every year to launder points through or do you actually go and do a stay under the second accounts name? I only made the account up this year maybe May or June? So hopefully they won't cancel it as I think they tend to work in Calendar years.

Bit harder from NZ with zero SPG properties here but we're in Bali next year and I'm thinking about doing a night at Four points Kuta for $82 or so under the +1s name. I just figured it might make the account seem more legitimate. The email is his and the cc will have his name on it. He travels by himself a couple of times a year for conference but accommodation doesn't tend to be at SPG properties.
We have no immediate use for them but I know we can find a use for them in future!

Given the medium term uncertainty introduced by the Marriott takeover I'm not sure I would be hoarding SPG points I didn't need.

True I hope they don't take away the ability to buy SPG points.
I can transfer them to SQ I'm sure we'll use them before 3yrs is up.

It isn't only stays that keeps your account active, e.g. I read the below as a transfer to (and then back from) a partners account would keep your account open. But I've also "earned" in other ways than a stay.

Your SPG Membership is considered "Inactive" if, during a 12-month period:

  1. you have not had an Eligible Stay at an SPG Participating Hotel;
  2. you have not earned*, redeemed, purchased or transferred any Starpoints, or
  3. your account has been cancelled.
*'Earned or redeemed' is defined as any points posting to or being removed, transferred, or redeemed from an SPG account.

Awesome I didn't know that purchasing points counted! I did browse the T&C but....well it was mostly boring...I paid more attention to the cancellation of accounts bit. But thank you!

Yes, but you get a month's grace so resets at 31 Jan. I think it would be fairer to have a rolling 12 months
