Have to say the SPG BRG is fantastic, very easy to use, just book a flex rate and them search skyscanner for better, unlike other chains it does not need to be a fully prepaid booking etc. I take the 2000 pts option over ten percent every time.

I'm confused.....

So you book a refundable rate at SPG property, find a better deal (which you probably could have has if you took the advance payment rate), and they match AND give you 2000 points?

The rate needs to be cheaper than any public rate on offer at SPG.com, what you booked is irrelevant, so you score a flexible non prepaid rate at less than prepaid price with a bonus 2000 Starpoints. Does not work at all hotels but handy where it does ( Looking at you Sheraton KL :). )

Don't Expedia have a BRG as well where if you find a lower price they will match it and give you a $50 voucher???

Between the two its seems you must be able to get some freebies...A

And so what does 2000 SPG points get you??? I guess there must be something stopping you from finding better prices, getting the 2,000 points then cancelling the room??

You only get the 2K when you actually stay, and its worth around $60 if you buy the points, transferred to AA, a bit more ;)

The SPG guarantee is one of the best because:

1. It can be claimed before you book, do you aren't taking your chances.

2. They respond rapidly via email with a yea or nay.

3. They are very good at actually matching/very agreeable people.

4. You can take the choice if cash or points. I normally take 10% but my stays would be longer than Markis'.

The expedia match is frequently a battle and all you get is another voucher. Plus booking through a wholesaler means you may not get points/status benefits etc.

Hilton has worked for me too, but many complain that it is too restrictive.

The points Cynicor made are quite to the mark.

The best feature is being able to submit a claim before needing to make any booking, so if the claim is declined then there really isn't any loss.

Also as 2,000 points can always be bought for US$70 (or sometimes $56 during a 20% off), then if the 10% is more than say $56, I will take the 10%.... otherwise I'd take the points.

I take the points simply because at present my SPG stays are one night duration for some reason ;), and the BRG brings the room cost to under $100, $70 worth of points is a very nice bonus.
