A bit surprised no comment on the bonus offer from SPG, transfer 20K SPG points & get 30K US (or AA) points. Not as good as last years 50% bonus offer but would have thought still useful to some.

Is it a 20% bonus on transfers? I thought it was a 20% bonus earn for stays?

Got the email earlier. Does that translate to 60,000 Amex MR to 30,000 miles US or AA?

I have not kept up with US awards rates but wouldn't the better value be AA?

Amex -->> SPG is 2:1 (i.e. 50%) rate. So 40,000 Amex = 20,000 SPG, then 20,000 SPG = 30,000 AA Miles with the extra bonus (25,000 AA miles before this extra bonus promotion).

Not a bad deal. I have about 80k AA miles and 40k MR points so am wondering if it's worth doing speculatively. Will probably use them in the next year but don't have a specific goal in mind at this point. Am a bit concerned about potential devaluation (though AA will probably still be quite competitive compared with other programs in the market with a 1:1 transfer from Amex).

Thanks. I must still be thinking Amex --> SPG is 3:1.

This promotion brings SQ and AA closer together coming from Amex MR. I would much rather fly Oneworld.

Calculation as per NM 40K MR = 20K SPG = 30K (US or AA).

Better value depends on what you want to do with those points. Personally find US rates better but only if you want return flights as they dont offer one way.

I think SPG pts are too valuable to transfer to AA or US , does anyone else think the same ?

Probably, while I did look at and still considering, at the moment am coming down on the side of keeping as SPG points.

That is why I said I was unsure. The way I remember

- AA return business class SYD-BKK is 70,000 AA miles
- US return business class SYD-BKK is 90,000 US miles?

To Bangkok (in fact SE Asia in general) this is true.
To US AA is more expensive (125K vs 110)
To Europe I think exactly the same (120K)
To North Asia I think the same (90K)

Using points + pay? I have never taken SPG seriously as their hotels are overpriced for my budget.

Stayed at the Aloft in BKK last year for 2K points, I thought that was decent value but as with anything value is in the eye of the beholder!

Not sure I agree... I've seen this a lot on FT... I think maybe because they(people saying this) are US based?

So if you have 60k SPG points that would get you say a 7 night stay at a Cat4 hotel right(inc free night)? Lets say that Cat4 hotel is $300/night that's $2100 value...

For the same 60k SPG points you could transfer to AA and get 75k AA. That 75k could get you one way first class AU-LAX or return business class AU-Asia... do you think these are worth less than $2100?

How did you get it for 2k? It's Cat2 so 3-4k /night ?

That sounds like good value.

Does SPG have a presence in Pattaya apart from the 5 star resort? Or any good value redemptions in SIN and HKG?

Most SPG hotels in Australia are on the expensive side but they do have some affordable options overseas.

You can sometimes get good value points + pay in Sheraton SIN.
Hard to find good SPG value in HKG.
