Hi All,

I am booking a RTW flight for next May/June – with a space and military theme – mainly Apollo programme, but some later space stuff too perhaps.

I am thinking/wondering which way to go.

Looking at going to:

  • · USS Hornet in San Francisco – ½ day to a day
  • · Boeing Factory in Seattle - an hour or two all up?
  • · Museum of Flight –if I do it - a day
  • · Both Smithsonians in Washington, - three days
  • · C-5 Galaxy display/Heavy Lift Museum in Dover, Delaware, and
  • · Kennedy Space Centre - two days

Just been looking at the planes on display and note, for example, there are a number of double-ups.

If I am mainly looking at the Apollo programme, am I doubling up here? If I had to sacrifice a place or two, how would people rank the place I am looking at in terms of relevance? For example – at a pinch, if I have to I could get away with the two Smithsonian’s and Kennedy.

Any ideas or suggestions please ?

Getting to and from..and doing the factory Tour at Boeing will take more than 1-2 hours...

Air Force museum in Dayton?

To my understanding there are two air /space museum in Washington one in town and the other 30 minutes outside of town, the one outside of town is supposed to be the better of the two

I'll be at Kennedy Space Centre next weekend! (Just wanted to share, no one i know IRL seems to think it's awesome)

It'll be fine by Wed, it'll be fiiiiiine

Some of the decent places/collections i have been to in the States:
USS Midway - San Diego
AMARG/Pima air and space museum - Tucson
National Naval Aviation Museum - Pensacola
National World War 2 Museum - New Orleans
Boeing Factory - Seattle
USS Intrepid - New York
Smithsonian Annex - Near Dulles airport (can get a bus there from the airport)
Smithsonian Museum - Wash DC
Cape Canaveral
Few good battleship museums as well but not really what this trip seems to be about

In Seattle, be aware that there are two Boeing attractions: the museum close to Seattle (S near the B737 factory, about halfway to SEA) and the main factory a fair drive north at Everett. While the factory is certainly interesting (allow pretty much a full day with travel), the museum IMHO is a must-do and will require a full day - and even then you probably won't do it all. As well as the deep Boeing history, it has goodies such as a Concorde, the B707 Airforce1 (both of which you can go aboard) and a SR-71.
