"Sorry sir, check-in is from 3pm"

I'm sorry but I got to blame the staff member here. This whole situation could've been de-escalated instantly if he just said, "sorry I can't get you a better room, but you know what? How about I comp you breakfast in the morning? It's on the house!" 🤣
Why on earth should anyone pander to behaviour like that. If people continue to reinforce it then it will continue to happen. He probably has done this antic every time he books into a place. Not acceptable.

Why do people think that a room on a high floor is preferential to a room on a low floor. and your personal VIP status is higher if given a high floor room,

I’ve never understood that

I am more likely to like the suite on a lower floor than a standard room on a higher floor. Especially as more likely to survive a fire.

Some countries, due to hurricanes/cyclones, lower floor rooms are nicer. Learned this in Guam, we were thrilled by the top floor view until we found out we were the expendable poor people 🤣

Agree politeness works. Arrived in Tel Aviv from an overnight flight about 8am from AKL via SYD and HKG so quite shattered. Concierge at Dan Panorama was very helpful, organised coffees and light breakfast while we waited for a room to be available.

Other experience was in HNL where we arrived about 9am. Being Hawaii and touristy the early checkin was USD55 which seemed good value so we took it.

Other times had to leave luggage which was fine. If you want to check in when you arrive organise flights and / or hotel bookings accordingly.

EDIT to tidy

I don't think a higher floor room is reflective of status but I prefer higher floor rooms as they are likely to have less noise, including street or night-life area noise.

I recall Melbourne Hilton on the Park many years ago for Ozfest and I had a 2nd floor room. Wasn't feeling well Saturday morning and stayed in room. The wind was howling all day through the corridors. Awful.

2nd floor room
I had a first floor apartment in New Orleans once. Now thats 2nd floor in the US because the don't have anything called Ground floor
Unfortunately it was right in the middle of the party area of NO.
Unfortunately it was also the top floor.

I know that you know.
But why do people think that. Hotels often sell high floors at a premium as well. Maybe it's that.

Having been on the second highest floor of the Westin Tokyo when an earthquake of 7.3 hit we sure would have been happier being on the second lowest floor.

I was being sarcastic (the joke being that breakfast is free at Holiday In Expresses)

I don't think higher levels are necessarily more premium. For me what matters is the room. I'd take a suite or nicer room over a higher floor any day of the week given how stingy most hotels are at handing out complimentary upgrades, even to their elite members.

Most fire truck ladders can only reach a couple of floors, too!

Some hotels in Honolulu provide complimentary early check-in. Case in point, I booked the Best Western the Plaza hotel and when I arrived in HNL at 6 AM (and got to the hotel around 7:30 AM) I was able to early check in for free! Only downside about the hotel is its proximity to the airport (as opposed to being in Waikiki) but otherwise can make a great hotel for a first/last night stay in HNL.

In North America we generally label our floors correctly (i.e. ground floor is floor 1, etc.). The only exception to this is Quebec which labels Ground floor as RC, a story for another day!

correctly
Beg to differ, i think everywhere else in the world there is a ground floor. They cant be right because they also use the imperial system of measurement. Though they correctly drive on the right side of the road.🤣
Ive sent delivery people to the wrong floor when in US, forgetting there is no ground floor 🤣

I prefer a high floor (for a view) and away from the elevator (for the noise). I changed that after a stay in a city that had an earthquake and it all shook.....for some reason I have forgotten about how scary that was until now. I have gone back to the views but will reconsider.

In noisy cities, higher floors usually equal less street noise.

Many hotels have "reception rooms" (think dances, weddings, functions etc) and nightclubs on Mezz or L1 so quite happy with higher floor, as long as they don't put you in <Top minus 1> where they have rooftop common area / bar / nightclub / restaurant / pool.

Low floor wins for me. Always happy for the quick exit in a fire.

And when I stay in San Francisco at the Chancellor (one of my favourite hotels) I always request a low floor at the front, so late evening I can open the window and enjoy the humming of the cable and pulleys for the cable cars. 😀

Having been caught on a mid level floor at at a Marriott in Chicago , that at 5 pm had a fire alarm go off . I would much prefer a lower level.
Notwithstanding I was already in PJs and of course the only person in pj's on the main road . Racing down the stair well wasn't fun at all

I have in my profile at all chains : High Floor Away from Elevator. I’ll compromise for a suite upgrade on a low floor but it cheeses me off if I’m allocated the room type I booked on a low floor adjacent to the elevator.

Back on topic if I really want a super early check-in I’ll contact the hotel in advance to request early check-in, book the night before if it’s affordable. Or book a day room at a nearby hotel if I don’t have access to an arrivals lounge and none of the previous options are available/ suitable.

Though here at the Marriott Mayfair in Bangkok they have an area you can wait in whilst they find you a room or leave your luggage or even have a shower.
