Some Indulgence On The Isle of Capri

We recently visited the Isle of Capri, off the west coast of Italy, and stayed at the Hotel Caesar Augustus - a boutique Relais & Chateau hotel in the town of Anacapri. Our experience was so good we thought it warranted sharing with the AFF community.

The Hotel Caesar Augustus is perched right on the edge of a 300m high cliff above the Bay of Naples with spectacular views across the bay to Mt Vesuvius and of Capri Town. It is the former holiday residence of a Russian prince which is now privately owned and operated by the Signorini family. The personal touch is immediately obvious when Francesco Signorini is present to welcome each guest as they arrive.

The hotel has 55 rooms. We stayed in one of the 31 junior suites. It had an area of 35m2 – very high ceilings with an L- shaped entry /bedroom, closet and separate marble bathroom. Many rooms have spectacular ocean views. Tastefully decorated with comfortable furniture.

This is an ideal hotel for those who like their hotels to have a more genteel ambience than many modern hotels provide. There is a quiet and relaxing calmness about the hotel you feel as soon as you arrive; staff are plentiful and well trained, with everything attended to without fuss and a concierge who sits you down with a welcome coffee or cup of tea to explain the hotel’s processes. You soon realise nothing is a bother – ask and you will receive.

The hotel has a free pickup service from the ferry terminal (you just notify them of which ferry you will be on and a hotel rep meets you with a sign). Our ride was a 7 series BMW. On Capri there is usually a charge of 10 Euros per bag for porters to deliver your luggage from ferry terminal to your hotel and taxis are expensive so it’s nice to have this service included.

Step through the entry lounge area out on to the long cliff edge terrace and feast your eyes on the views which are the equal of any you will see anywhere – settle into a chair and order your first coughtail as you gaze out to sea.

At the Caesar Augustus ladies need never worry about their designer handbags touching the floor either – even before you’ve had time to settle into your chair at breakfast (champagne optional) a waiter will appear with a short, 4 legged stool on which your Gucci or LV can nestle while you dine.

If you ever visit this area of Italy consider the Caesar Augustus – it's one for the bucket list.

Piano bar at the far end - had a pianist and drummer playing (very well) in the evenings - comfy chairs, very enjoyable for a few coughtails before a short walk into Anacapri for dinner.

There are steps down to the marina from the hotel - we did these but my quads were like jelly by the time we got down to sea level - a big gelato fixed that

Yes it is pricey. There is a clothing outlet store down a little lane in Capri Town - Mrs V was humoured by the fact the discounted price of last season's jeans was 425 Euros (nearly $AUD700) - and they looked dreadful.

Stayed here for two nights as part of our European honeymoon 3 years ago.

It is the most incredible place to stay in the world, with the most amazing sunset.

We went to Santorini after Italy and it was very disappointing after staying at the Hotel Caesar Augustus.

The pictures do not do it any justice.

It is absolutely paradise.

Thanks for the report. We didn’t stay overnight, but spent a lovely day on Capri nearly 6 years ago. We got there on the first ferry from Sorrento and it seemed we had the island to ourselves. Doubt we will return, but if we did a Capri stay looks good.
