I know there are few solo travellers on this site so thought it might be worth having a dedicated thread for deals with no or reduced single supplement

I found this site that might help

Of course for cruisers Ponant has very many cruises with no single supplement. That is you get a cabin paying for just one person where as normally you have to pay for two.

currently 165 on offer. There is a quota I think for each cruise so the offer can be withdrawn without notice but then other cruises can also open up.

Intrepid Travel is another small group travel company who waive single supplements if you are open to sharing a room with another person of the same sex in the group. It doesn't mean you will definitely have to share Years ago I travelled to Russia with Peregrine (their sister company that was rolled under their brand name during Covid lockdown years). The agent on the phone was most helpful in telling me there were only 4 others in my group, two couples. So I didn't pay the single supplement but still landed a single room.

The risk of having to share a room with a stranger is way too high for me. Own room and own bathroom or I don't go

YMMV

The relevant points still remain regardless of one's mileage being 1) you aren't obliged to pay a single supplement with Intrepid and 2) if you're canny, book without paying it and only pay at the last minute if you think there's a chance you'll have to share a room (if you land a good booking agent he/she will let you know if you'll definitely have a single room or not).

FYI @FlyingFiona you cant always just add single suplement closer to departure with Intrepid. The only way to gurantee your own room is to pay supplement at time of booking.

Sure you can get lucky, but more often than not you will end up sharing and not necessarily with a compatible room mate.

On the Peregrine/Comfort Class trips, solo male travellers are far less common than solo female travellers so chances of free single room increase if you are male.

GAdventures, World Expeditions, Contki, The Dragon Tour, Trafalgar and many others all offer no single supplement if you are willing to share a room.

But with age and a better bank balance sharing is a hard no from me unless travelling with my partner, sibling or a friend.

Any recommendations for a week in Dec for a solo older person (flatly refuse to say elderly )
Due to a partner's health issues (yes again ) there is a chance travel insurance may not be available at all for him this year .
So considering a solo trip to
Japan
Republic of Korea
Shanghai or Beijing
However I like places which would have Xmas decorations etc .
Zero interest is group tours, however looking at decent deals for a flight maybe and accommodation

There is to my knowledge no airline that penalises single travellers i.e. all commercial airlimes fares are priced per person. For acommodation in Asia my experience is that charges are generally per room which generally accomodate minimum 2 people, ive never noticed single rooms in Asia which are common in UK, Europe and some parts of Latin America.

High speed trains, limo busses and metro all very inexpensive in South Korea.

I actually have had a single room in Tokyo in a Marriot there. 3/4 bed (?) but the occupancy was only for one. I really liked that
Thank you :)

Fencox Travel, a small group, travel company that doesn't charge single supplement and everyone gets their own room. I suppose you pay for it somewhere, but the trips I looked at today seemed reasonably priced for small group travel. I haven't travelled with them, but it's a sister company to Patch (women only) and I've heard good things about them.

Have you considered Philippines, staying in an upmarket area of Metro Manila such as Makati?

Very few if any nations worldwide would beat Phils. for Christmas decorations: they are everywhere.

Despite the current negative publicity re the southern island of Mindanao, 90 per cent of Philippines is very safe (including the main island of Luzon, the central and western Visayas with cities such as Cebu City, excellent Iloilo City and Bacolod City and famous islands such as Bohol and Boracay, and eastern Mindanao. with Siargao Island.

There are many beautiful white sand beaches, typically except for Boracay and Bohol less crowded than some Thai ones, though rarely super close to airports.
