I've been doing advance phantom bookings now for a few months and the day finally arrived, T-353. I got on the QFF site and booked my J Award flight from Perth to LA (OK through Brisbane). No problem. So maybe through Sydney or Melb and on an A380 would have been nice but at this stage I'm on a refurb 747 with row 14 seats upstairs and I'm a very happy camper. Sure the options are limited but if you are prepared to be flexible and get in early, you can get good value from your points.

Have done J i the upper in refurbed 747 BNE/LAX/DFW/BNE, you wont be disappointed, lots of room in the old bird up there, sonly about 20 seats, your own galley and loo.

These days I go via HKG direct from CNS on CX, then onwards to USA or Europe.

Agreed, upper deck on a refurb 744 is nice. Came back from SIN on one recently.

The problem is people are either ignorant of the preparation involved or expect just to plug in dates and have the seats available for them that they want.

Like anything the old adage of the 7 P's applies to redeeming award flights.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

But availability *is* another problem. Someone looking for the same flight to LAX as ashleyn just a few minutes later might have considerably more trouble.

Have I not alluded to the availability problem through my second suggestion?

Others have mentioned that programs such as NZ have exactly the same issue with premium availability.
