Snakes on a plane killed

FOUR escaped pythons have caused a Qantas plane to be grounded in Melbourne after airline staff failed to find them.

The young Stimson's pythons, four of 12 in a container in the Boeing 737-800's cargo hold, apparently escaped on Tuesday during a 2½-hour flight from Alice Springs to Melbourne.

Passengers waiting to catch flight 446 to Sydney were put on a later flight and asked to provide an address to Qantas staff so their luggage, delayed during the search for the reptiles, could be forwarded to them.

Anyway, the article didn't really say they were killed, bar the headline. So here's hoping they did find all of them and it was only four snakes.

Mr Aston said that after establishing that the species was not threatened or endangered, the aircraft was fumigated to kill the four pythons.

Bit sad, but I can understand the desire to not spend days hunting snakes inside an aircraft, especially when they might have already snuck out onto the tarmac and boarded another nearby plane.

After a couple of flights, the snakes would have been so annoyed at the poor service they would have left the plane on their own accord

Being cold blooded, if they were just in the cargo hold I can't imagine they would of lasted long.

Still have to find them and remove the bodies, otherwise there's going to be an awful stench soon.

And being interested in herpetology it's a little saddening, however maybe a review of how snakes are transported is now in order to make sure they aren't able to get free again.
