Nothing new in this. They're parked in the desert after all. Closer to home, you'd occasionally find a snake on the international tarmac at Perth. Never saw any, anywhere else in Oz. Guess they wanted to leave.

Can someone tell me why Qantas fly half way around the world to park their A380’s in the Mojave dessert, yet SQ parks them at Alice Springs?

As per @Mattg 's article:
Qantas expects the A380s to be grounded for several years, so Victorville is simply a more suitable (and cheaper) place to store the superjumbo planes for an extended period. It’s also much closer to Qantas’ A380 maintenance facility at Los Angeles International Airport.
