Smells that remind you of certain places

My wife and I were talking about places we have visited and the distinctive smells that we associated with those places. Some examples were, coconut oil reminded us of beaches in general, coffee and bread in Paris, cinnamon and vanilla in USA (Disneyland in particular), Sandalwood in Fiji, eucalyptus in Australia. I am sure everyone on this group can identify places and smells (good or bad), and for those expats there is smell that reminds you of home. What is it?

Whenever I smell raw sewerage I think of Bangkok.

Whenever in traffic near a bus or there's one nearby, I always get transported back to Bombay (Mumbai) where I had a few holidays as a kid, over 30 years ago. Was fascinated with the London-style double deckers. The diesel fumes and sounds always take me there instantly.

Funnily enough I think of skiing in Falls Creek when I smell a two-stroke engine. For many years the snowmobiles were two-stroke and it has become a very strong association for me.

A human being's sense of smell is closely associated with memory and emotion. I took a particular trip in January that I really enjoyed and happened to wash my clothes using a laundry detergent not available in Oz. Seriously, on a return trip to the same destination I bought a box of the stuff, because when I use it really takes me back there. It's a neat little trick if you happen to be on a fun trip you want to really remember later.

Ozone from the motors on the London Underground, and the sweet smell of jet fuel that you'd get before the days of air bridges always meant holidays to me as a child.

Yes I noticed that this week too.

Walked into the Hilton Colon in Guayaquil and it had that underlying musty smell from being in that climate but it immediately took me back to Cuba, and especially the Hotel Nacional in Havana.

Was waiting for my room fresh from the airport, having a mojito on the same porch that presidents and the likes of Ernest Hemmingway had sat and that musty smell was the background to it. I can still see the peacocks wandering around too.

I love the smell of concrete and steel in the morning.

Raw sewerage is haunting me now and I haven't been to Bangkok nor to many parts of India. I try not to go to places that have a close relationship to Satans asshole. We used to stop in Bombay with QF as a refueling stop and the stink there could not have been healthy.
