I returned to SYD and used smartgate for the first time as previously I always used manual passport control as I always had children with me. After Smartgate took my photo it asked me to remove the ticket and proceed to baggage claim. The customs officer then took my incoming passenger card and waved me through but I did not give him the smartgate ticket nor did he asked for it. When I got home I read on the ticket which said give this smartgate ticket along with the incoming passenger card to the customs officer. How important is it for the customs officer to have collected this smartgate ticket from me .....do they need it to further process my arrival in terms of updating my passport or clearing immigration..........or do they just collect the ticket and store/destroy it.

I wouldn’t be too concerned. Yes, they are supposed to take it and unusual that they didn’t.
