Smart Casual ??

What he said was drifting off topic but still offered support for the horrible no-thongs-in-the-lounge rule, which is a stupid rule.

Summary ... Thongs in lounge = good

End of summary
Summary. Thongs in lounge are good for you.

Just like I don't have a right to judge what people wear you don't have a right to tell me what's acceptable and what's not. I decide not you, not society.

I personally don't like thongs. They don't belong in public. I try to avoid places where people are wearing thongs. I applaud Qantas' decision.

But in saying that I do feel sorry for you. My 2 big toes are killing me right now. My neck and left shoulder are far worse and left elbow not far behind. My wrists are another story. When they are bad they bad. Can't hold anything. Touch anything and a sharp electrical pain goes right through the wrist. Sacroilitis, ankylosing spondilitis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, osteo arthritis are not fun to live with but still manage to cope and don't need to wear thongs.

Oh and those ugly thongs that women wear with a strap at the heel are still thongs but still sneak past the rules.

Smart casual is good compromise in the middle.

I am sorry to hear that, but for me nice things = maximum comfort = thongs.

Yes, I am passionate about this horrible rule.
May I suggest you read the thread a little more carefully before making such a statement. This thread is in the VA Velocity thread. VA have no such rule (unfortunately). You've jumped down the throat of someone expressing their opinion because for some inexplicable reason, you believe your opinion is worth more sheckles than theirs, but you aren't even correct in your statement.

I'm not anti-thong. I'm anti-people who are anti-nanny state. The nanny state is sometimes good, sometimes bad. Are seat belts bad? (Damn you, nanny state!). Is high-viz bad? (Damn you NS, damn you to hell!). Drink driving? (Damn you!). Drink-posting to AFF? (......yeah, that's bad. Should be banned :p

OT but every time I hear the word "nanny state" I'm reminded of a conversation with a friend who had developed a crush on her GP, and when told it probably wasn't a good idea to pursue her interest* further as there were rules against that kind of thing declared loudly "bloody nanny state, won't let me do anything"

*unrequited, in case the Medical Board have reps on this forum!

That does not change the fact that the thong rule is a cough rule. That does not change the fact that others are trying to inflict pain onto my feet and my body to allow me entrance to a lounge that often is associated with my ticket purchase. This does not change the fact others are trying to impose their will on me against my will.

Thongs in lounge = good.

VA don't have such a rule at present.

IMO I am not sure that anyone is trying to "inflict pain onto your feet" and we all have different opinions.

Your profile indicates you do fly with QF amongst others and QF do have this lounge rule. Maybe your frustration could be directed to QF customer service. I am not sure that QF share your feeling of thongs in lounge = good

Can we agree at least that some form of footwear is required at a minimum?

Photo from Instagram, someone was "feeling fruity" to be flying J and needed to show off their strangely long toes with their morning cereal.

I'm more comfortable nude, maybe they should allow that ;)

There is a photo of a national PNG guy hanging in the departure lounge (bar) at POM int. It depicts a traditional drummer walking along a beach (not entirely sure, but I think it's said to attract sharks). He's wearing basically nothing........except a pair of thongs! ;) That'd be OK in the VA lounge, presumably???

It's actually a fabulous photo and so to is the one beside it of a perfect PNG beach being reflected in a pair of mirrored sunglasses a PNG man is wearing (if anyone is in POM, look out for them, they're really great photos).

Haven't owned thongs for years, but nothing against them, in fact often think about getting another pair, but strictly for beach and other selected very casual wear. That said, I don't mind if people wear them in the lounge or on the plane, as long as they keep them (and the 'plates-of-meat' that inhabit them) off the furniture/bulkheads etc. But the airlines make their rules. The ignorant pig that was pictured all those posts ago with bethonged feet on the chair arm/back certainly is an example of someone who should be spoken to and/or ejected (ironically, I think that was at the PER VA lounge where they take RSA ludicrously seriously to the point where a person reported they could not collect a drink for their travelling companion from the bar along with their own - nosirree that would be giving them two drinks (shudder!) at the one time. Talk about warped priorities).

I share penegal's opinion that it becomes a safety issue. If (your favourite deity forbid) there is a serious incident and I have to exit the plane quickly, possibly onto broken glass, superhot metal, hot tarmac, fire, snow, mud, whatever, the last thing I would want to do it in is a pair of thongs. And I would not want to endanger anyone else by holding things up in any way because I was wearing them (or have same done to me).

I'm currently in the VA BNE lounge, which is fairly busy and although the time of day would suggest predominantly business travellers, I'd say at least a third are in non-typical of business attire. A quick scout around has me picking just two guests wearing thongs (both the stock standard black rubber K-Mart variety).

I find that somewhat typical and flys in the face of ridiculous comments like "you'll be able to pick me as I'll be the one without my head where the sun doesn't shine". Honestly, picking the thong wearers is not difficult and surprisingly enough (not), all those others without inappropriate footwear, don't appear to have their heads "where the sun doesn't shine".

Another thong-brigade myth busted!

I wore thongs on an aircraft yesterday for the 1st time.

It was a 40 min flight from PPT-BOB. If we had not rotated at V1 we would have been in the water. The total flight is over water. If we had landed short or overshot the runway we would be in the water.

Provided I survived any of that I need to swim, so no shoes.

The main reason however was high temperature and high humidity with no air con at PPT

:D :D

You reminded me of something from school that involved shoes and swimming and me saying my shoes are dragging me down. But way off topic.

The "where the sun doesn't shine" comment wasn't about thong wearers, it was dig at closed minded people. I should have realised that you might not have picked up on that though, because you were for the most part ignoring my, how did you put it that was so kindly censored by the mods? Oh yeah, drivel!

Again, enjoy your day!

Yes, I understood your comment...it's a pity you don't understand mine! My post was about a relevant and factual, observation. Let me be a bit clearer for you.... contrary to the vocal minority, thongs are not as " common place" in an airline lounge as the vocal minority would like to portrait. They are not the fashion statement that most lounge goers wish to be associated with, no matter where their heads reside!

Fair enough, my bad for taking the bait and letting this thread get to me again. I don't wish to be adversarial here.

I appreciate your factual observation, but time of day, location and time of year will certainly affect what is commonplace in an airline lounge. I wouldn't expect many thongs in the BNE lounge in the morning in late May; CNS or PER in the afternoon in January would be a completely different story.

Honestly, I couldn't care less what others wear on their feet or elsewhere for that matter; I just have trouble understanding how some people can get so worked up about what doesn't necessarily affect them in any way other than feeling uncomfortable. I think I mentioned earlier that if what someone else is wearing is enough to ruin your day (not saying that anyone's days are being ruined here), there may be an underlying problem.

I agree, but I thought the observation was worth noting. I get bored in the lounge and thought it an interesting observation that belonged in this thread. I might just do the same, mid summer in CNS and OOL as a comparison!

For sure! I'd take notes in PER, but what I'd get at T2 on Wednesday afternoons and T1 on Wednesday nights before the East coast red eyes would only serve to skew the results severely.

Cheers!

Estimation of general lounge make up is acceptable to unskew, skewed results! I sincerely hope there are not very many who are as bored in a lounge as I, to even bother with a count, but why not....... The great thong count begins!

You could always burn some Velocity points on an iPad to while away the time. Who knows, there may even be a 'count the thongs' game in the app store!

Obviously the rule doesn't apply in the Perth International lounge. Have seen two pairs so far this afternoon, one under the chair of the owner who has her feet up on the chair! I feel judgmental...Guess I am, but I think it's a shame to see standards slip
