Fellow AFFer's,

In late Jan 15 I'm trying to get a flight home for me and the wife, CDG-BNE, and was going to use Amex MR points.

I have the choice of either Singapore Airlines on the A380 on a business saver for 161,500 Kris points, or can catch Cathay on the 777 for 220,000 asia miles on a business standard award.... at the moment there is plenty of availability with both.

Which would you choose??

Is Cathay worth an extra 60k MR points??? Is Singpore business a good product??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Assuming they 1:1 I wouldnt pay that difference to go on CX. You cant go wrong with either. Which timing works better?

Yes they are transferred 1:1...

Singapore Airlines flights has an 18 hour layover in SIN which is not so great.... Cathay is only 6 hours...

Is there any advantages/disadvantages to either airline when travelling with an infant (i.e. better bassinet or seating arrangements) or when travelling as a couple (i.e. not able to see each other)??

18 hour stopover might be a blessing with the infant.

Assuming that 60K is for all passengers, not each? I rate CX very high and with your QFWP status the lounge access in HKG will be fabulous.

The SIN-BNE sector - is that A380 or an old regional fitted cabin?

Yes 60K extra for all passengers...

SIN-BNE is on an A330-300... its got 30 in J and 255 Y..... is the fit-out any good??

If it is like the SQ 333 I caught MEL-SIN recently it is very similar to VA's domestic 332s that operate BNE/SYD/MEL-PER (the newer ones, not XFA/B). 2-2-2, angled flat beds, enough pitch and width.

Angle flat :( I try and avoid these like the plague (so a fair chunk of QFI destinations) CX is dead flat - total bliss and is the closest thing to an F cabin in the market.

YMMV but if it's a night flight I'd go with CX based on the last sector cabin and better privileges in HKG due to your WP'ness. Either way - both are great choices! You can't go wrong....

Is there any definitive way to find out which aircraft will service CX157 on 27 Jan 15. I tried seat guru but clearly I am an amateur at this!

All CX flight in/out of OZ are the new Cirrus Cabin The world's best business class seats

"This business class seat is on all Cathay Pacific flights into and out of Australia as well as most international flights from Hong Kong, apart from the Boeing 747 jumbos."

EF is showing new J cabin for the CX157 27th Jan 15.

My opinion is that SQ's long haul business class is better than Cathay's, especially as a bed. It feels so spacious. For some reason, even as a skinny sub-60kg person, CX's seats felt a little bit cramped. Being short, I did not have issues with length on SQ.

The Question? A380 is a confirmed good lie flat seat. What about the last sector SIN-BNE ? EF is showing A330 2-2-2 layout - looks like old school to me....

The 330 SQ product is basically the same as the VA 330 product. Angled lie flat.

The 330 SQ product is basically the same as the VA 330 product. Angled lie flat.

So lie flat for 64% of the trip with SQ and endure an extra 12 hr transit or lie flat for 100% with CX and enjoy one of the best F lounges on the planet for an extra 60K MR...

Which one will the OP go for?

CX would be my choice... by far!

Would be my choice too. Not sure I'm a reliable source for recommendations! We're going BNE-SYD-SIN-HKG-SIN-BNE to spend a few days celebrating our 20th in Hong Kong later this year :p

BNE-SYD.....for the F lounge
SYD-SIN.....for BA F cabin
SIN-HKG-SIN.....to stay at the Four Seasons Hong Kong
SIN-BNE......the most sensible sector of them all

You only live once and 20 years is a bloody long time ;)
