JohnK - I booked here - + welcome to Hotel 81 +
However, I haven't had confirmation yet, so technically i'm just requesting.
The rate will be $80SGD if I get it.

I just found this Agoda site you've mentioned and now i'm thinking I should cancel the booking.
Have you booked through them before?

Yeah its $50 AUD on Agoda.com too.

Are these sites reliable?
Anyone used em'?

Booking with the hotel direct sometimes gives good rates but in this case with the A$ free falling the hotel rate does not look so good.

Many times. I accumulate the reward points and when I get to US$5 or US$10 I use for the next booking. I remember in June when I booked Hotel 81 Princess I redeemed US$10 and only paid US$32 for the night. Not a bad reward scheme, simple but effective.

Reminds me I should probably book this room now before the A$ free falls further....

Excellent. Thanks for the info!

I ended up booking the Fragrance Emerald (on agoda), which is just a few streets away.
The rate was $70 for one night.

Careful with HotelPriceFinder. It is quoting room rates in A$ but Agoda is quoting in US$. It is also using an exchange rate of US69c for the A$. Also when looking at the Agoda website front page you need to add 18.5% to the room rate and HotelPriceFinder does not take this into condideration.

and for eg. I found the Hotel 81 Princess for as cheap as $48AUD all up!!
The best I can do a few days before Christmas is US$49, A$81, all up!!!!

What's going to happen to SG hotel prices?

I've been a regular visitor to SG for business and pleasure since 1975. The hotel prices were reasonable until about a year ago. We were there last Christmas and the prices were rising then. Since that time the prices have litteraly doubled.

<..>

Yes, from 2007 to 2008 our normal 4 star company rates have gone from around 160/170 SGD to 220+ SGD. Yes at the moment and the last few months prices have been a bit better than earlier in the year.

I know you ended up booking a cheaper hotel but just thought somebody could use some perspective on the 4* market.
5* can be cheap, can be really expensive, very much depending on demand on the day.

Maybe this helps but I am currently in SIN and booked Hotel Re! through WOTIF for $170/night. 6 month old hotel near Outram MRT Station, walking distance to Clarke Quay and close to Chinatown. Rooms are small but very new, clean and comfortable. 37 inch LCD wall mounted flat screen TV makes the room bigger. Good working desk which suits me plus the added bonus of free wireles internet, some hotels charge upwards of 25 a day for internet. Nice comfortable double bed, in room safe, need to ask for iron and board. Breakfast should be missed as not that good for $21. Friendly staff, free one way shuttle to major areas. I have stayed at many 4 star hotels in SIN and this one rates right up there. Only thing missing is swimming pool. IMO I would highly recommend this hotel for the price and plan on staying here again if price is right.

:D Just found that earlier tonight and have booked it for late feb. Glad to hear it's nice!

Ooh, that looks v cool! I have booked the New Majestic for end of year but I am tempted to switch... I especially like the look of the Business club room.

Turns out that the Business Club room is actually smaller than the Executive Room, yet the latter is cheaper. Have booked one night there at the Executive Room for S$220 which is S$100 cheaper than New Majestic. That's S$100 extra to spend on the watermelon martinis at New Asia Bar.

Location seems to be the best of both worlds - both for Friends of Dorothy places on Neil Rd in Chinatown, as well as Clarke Quay bars, CHIJMES and New Asia Bar at Swissotel Stamford.

Thanks for the tip. :)

"Figures from July, when the dollar began to fall, through to October, showed that prices had dropped dramatically in Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - in Vietnam's case, by more than 50 per cent."
Not very good research is it? I would love to know which hotels dropped their prices. From what I have observed in Singapore and Thailand the hotel rates are the same if not higher.

Yep, i can tell you Singapore is no cheaper !!!! its actually way more expensive, well the SGD rate is the same but the conversion makes it say 30+ % more expensive than 4 or 5 months ago.

And a couple of weeks ago my last trip to Vietnam, well lets just say they hotel rates (USD 280+ for novotel) were not cheap at all. Was in SGN and its always expensive hotels, especially if you book a little late.

After all that, I noticed that the New Majestic has gone down to S$280 so I'm back there. :)

Hotel prices seem to have fallen a fair bit. Booked the Swissotel Stamford for someone for just S$250, previously I remember that they'd charge about S$350.

Now waiting for the St Regis or Sheraton to bring their prices down for Easter...
