Thought some people might be interested in this. I got this info by email from SIA. Pity I'm not flying anywhere that I would need to have a Star Alliance carrier take me.

"Star Alliance

Australia Points Plus Promotion!

There's never been a better time to be a member of a Star Alliance frequent flyer program. That's because we'll give all Australian residents 5,000 bonus miles with every outbound flight you take from Australia until 30 November 2002.

Plus, for a double treat, if you hold the equivalent of Star Alliance Gold or Star Alliance Silver status within your current non-Star Alliance frequent flyer program, we'll match it if you fly before 30 September 2002.

Conditions

Offer only open to residents of Australia. Terms and conditions apply. Visit www.staralliance.com for details. To earn bonus miles and/or status match you must fly on an outbound flight from Australia eligible for mileage accrual operated by Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Lauda Air, THAI, or United. Members with current Star Alliance Gold or Star Alliance Silver level cannot earn equivalent status in another Star Alliance frequent flyer program. New status is valid for a minimum of one year. bmi is not participating in this offer. ANA is not accepting new members from Australia.
