we are flying melbourne to singapore then to vietnam, and doing the same on the return trip all with Singapore airlines and silk air, are we able to access the lounge (we are also virgin velocity members) and if not are we able to purchase access? thanks in advance

Unless you are flying J or are VA Gold or above, I don't think you will automatically obtain access to the SQ lounge.
However you can purchase access to the Ambassador Transit Lounge in Terminal 2 for up to six hours at a time I believe.

You will need to check the rates per pax to determine if it's worth your money.

Hey it's helpful to tell us your class of travel and velocity status! if flying business or you are VA gold, you have access to Silver Kris lounges in Melbourne. Singapore is a bit different though; only business passengers have access to Silver Kris lounge, while VA gold members have to use the basic Krisflyer Gold lounge (nowhere near as nice as VA or QF domestic lounges). The Ambassador transit lounge is worth the money if you need a nap/shower but the lounge itself is tiny and a waste of time.

There are also other lounges in SIN that you can pay into, and/or access with a Priority Pass card (which you can purchase, if you don't already have one via a credit card). The public areas in Changi are also perfectly tolerable though, so your money might be better spent there.
