hi all I am heading to Japan and was wondering what is the best sim card for use in Japan, thanks in advance

I'm off to Japan and Taiwan for 10 days shortly, and have purchased a 10-day Asia SIM-card with 6GB data from Simcorner for $25 incl postage.

It seems to have pretty good coverage across Asia (including Japan) and was the best one I could find online.

It also seems to get good reviews, but in the event it has a problem I will use my Australian Optus SIM card which has roaming enabled (at a much higher cost).

I always take a couple of phones when travelling overseas (belt and braces).

I have always used Lemon Mobile and have never experienced a issue.

The sim card works on Japan's number 1 mobile carrier NTT Docomo

I have had two trips to Japan this year and both times used an Airalo e-Sim.
Fantastic value and no problems in ski resorts in the mountains and also down in Kysushu.

Referral code here.

Thanks Cosi sounds appealing I will check it out

Just a note, on Optus and Vodafone they both offer $5 a day roaming for 7GB(?) I believe.

Depending on the situation, it may come out to be similar priced or if you actually need your current number for contacting as you can also use it for standard calls to and from Australia.

Otherwise for Sim cards available pre departure the thread has got most of them. There are plenty of other good options on arrival (in fact there's more than pre departure).

To add a postscript.

Just returned from Japan (and Taiwan) and can confirm that this SIM card worked flawlessly, with very good coverage almost anywhere. The 6 Gb lasted the entire 10 days, without any scrimping and saving required.

I'd use this product again in a heartbeat. Certainly it easily beat the ripoff charges levied by the likes of Optus.

Does anyone know how I could get a JP SIM that isn't a temporary number without requiring a Japanese residential address?

I'm looking for options to get a Japanese phone number that isn't limited to short term data only plans.

Alot of the time I hear people using their hotel address or similar to get it but otherwise.. could be tricky. Is it a situation where you can't use LINE or similar? Otherwise I've heard of people using BIC SIM but it's a monthly thing - 【公式】BIC SIM|ビックカメラの格安SIM・格安スマホ

You might find this a useful site for researching options for SIMs in Japan

Back to my comments about SImsdirect from Jul.
Even now into Aug, I was able to use the esim here in Aust, even though it (esim) was bought from Simsdirect, for when I was in NZ.
They (2deg) have a link to Optus here.
After my trip in Jul this year, the 2 deg esim still remembered me!
Good thing about if you can, buy your sim from Simsdirect, is that you know your Sim phone number before departing for overseas.
I would have thought that the sim would have expired, as it said valid for one month.
Seems that if I recharge regularly, I keep the number.
---
So for Himeno, maybe look into getting an esim from Simsdirect, and set up the activation before going to Japan, and then, while in Japan, set up who Simsdirect link is with, and recharge regularly.
2 deg didn't ask me for an address, and as the link is with Optus, when they (2 deg) send the verification text, I was able to get it, without having to put in 64.
I don't work for Simsdirect, but am very satisfied with the service.
Will be going back to NZ in Dec this year.

Simsdirect (Japan)
6gb for 12 days Aud$35
10gb for 30 days Aud$45
And then keep recharging 1000 JPY for every few months.
That is about Aud$15, which would keep the number alive.
Might last a years worth, of being able to do the recharge.
There is some mins included too.

thanks for that , was thinking of getting one prior to leaving Aus any suggestions?
Try Simsdirect once off.
3gb was enough for a few days, used it in NZ, did a lot of data, only in fact used 911mb over 3 days!
Meaning they don't suck you dry, so to speak, data mb wise.
They do have physical and esims.
Esim was easy to set up, prior to departure, just scan your mobile phones camera onto a laptop which has got wifi, and the QR code.
