I need to sleep there one morning as I dont want to drive 10 hours straight after a red eye.

Are there any showers in MEL airport? Last time I had to sleep there for 6 hours and then drive home, and I felt totally disgusting without a shower. Especially now it will be worse due to weather.

I have no status (only NB on QFF) or lounge access.

10 hours drive from MEL . I know the Tulla "freeway" can be congested at times, but surely with 10 hours drive ahead there is a closer airport? 10 hours west would have you through Adelaide, 10 hours north would have you almost to SYD or at CBR, 10 hours south or east would have you very wet. Where is home?

My guess is the OP lives somewhere along the Barrier Highway in NSW.

With that sort of drive ahead of you, you might want to consider popping across the carpark to the nearby Formula one hotel for a snooze in a real bed and shower.

If your going to drive for 10 hours, surely there would be a closer airport than MEL...

I'd be considering an LCC flight to get to a closer airport to your destination after a red eye... (assuming you haven't already booked)...

After being on a few of them there is no way I'd drive a car (and certainly not long distance) until I'd well and truely rested... There is a reason why they are call "red eye's" and not "step off the plane feeling well rested" flights...

I'd suggest considering one of the hotels as well. You'll get a better sleep there than at the airport.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn at MEL last Tuesday. Arrived at midnight from KUL and departed AM for ADL.
Very comfy pillow top mattress - Highly recommended. Unlike Air Asia X, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Their seats are only suitable for an anorexic midget but that's another story.

I live in Sydney, but I am taking an air asia flight...hence the long drive. Works out pretty cheap, but I think this is the last time I will do it, as its way too much trouble.

We have two drivers, so we switch every 2 hours.

Thanks 'thewinchester' for your advice regarding the shower.

Have you already left for this trip, or is it something still in the future?

The reason why I ask is I'd seriously consider getting a cheap MEL - SYD fare rather than driving... It'd probably work out to be a similar price once you have factored in petrol and Mel car parking costs, and besides 10 hours on the humerless (hume hwy) would not be fun (or overly safe) after a red-eye flight, even with 2 drivers... The other options (eg stay at nearby motel) simply increase your costs and make taking a cheap flight even more attractive...

I am in MEL now and leave for KUL tomorrow. It worked out more expensive flying due to the luggage we will be bringing back. (and my brother piked at the last minute because of a scholarship interview, so that messed things up a little)

Sorry its not really a red eye. We arrive at around 12 midnight I think, and then leave for SYD around 6ish. Did this in July with no probs bar the seedy showerless part.

No problems, but flying Air Asia - are you a sadis_?

Well he is taking a friend, so technically he is inflicting the pain of LCC's such as Air Asia on them.
