Should I cancel return leg if I can't fly on that day?

Hi all

I've got a return leg QF Y BNE-SIN that I can't use and the change fee is ridiculous to the point it's not cost effective to change. Cancellation for a refund is also pointless given the negligible refund and prohibitive fees.

So I'm thinking that the most I can do is to do a no-show. Anyone else have any suggestions? Should I officially cancel it? This would only be beneficial to QF.

That gets eaten up by the QF's $400 "button pressing" fee (cancellation fee).

Provided it's not going to be too difficult to do, cancel it properly. I wouldn't spend hours on the phone, but if it's a simple click of a button do it, since it will allow QF to re-open your seat for sale and thus a pax whom may have otherwise missed out could now get a seat.

A no-show would effectively block that seat.

Don't do anything in case QF decide to charge you for a one-way airfare SIN-BNE which could be more expensive than the return.

Yes I know it sounds silly but possible.

I agree. Proactively contacting the airline potentially gives them the opportunity to try recalculating the fare!

I think I lose my return flight in any scenario. To move the flight to a date I want is $100 (change fee) + $80 (admin fee) + $362 (fare difference). Not worth it in my view.

It would actually be beneficial to anyone who might want to buy a ticket late in the piece, when the flight may well appear as sold out.

How often do people on here complain about there being empty seats when it appeared there were no seats available for sale?

Do the right thing - for others - and put it back into the pool.

I'm pretty sure QF would be overselling the flight if it were full anyway, so I personally wouldn't bother cancelling the ticket if I was going to be worse off than if doing nothing.

You can place the return flight into credit, or on hold, if you don't want to no show. You then have the option of using it in the future if you plans do change and it is effective to use it. Otherwise, it just disappears when the ticket expires. You can't do that online though, a human has to do it.

Out of interest, what is the $80 admin fee for? I didn't know QF charged an admin fee on a change? That's what their $100 is for!

Can't say I like the idea of QF having their cake, baked using very expensive ingredients, and eating it too. Why should they have the opportunity to double dip on the seat? If it gets sold, you should get a refund. If it doesn't, you've done your dough. Else, no show. It's the easiest thing for you. Ftm's credit suggestion might be a goer to get something back.
