Should hotel programs let you split the points/elite night credits?

When you book a flight, the points and status credits go to each passenger individually. That's simple enough - if two people are flying together, both get the points/credits since each person has to pay for their own seat.

Hotel loyalty programs work a bit differently, since you obviously get the points and elite night credits on a "per room" basis. This means that, if you're sharing a room with someone, only the lead person on the booking gets the nights/points.

Obviously that's fair enough, since you're only booking one room. But, for people who often share a room, do you think it would be a good idea for hotels to give the option for both people staying in the room to split the points/nights in half? E.g. if you're staying 2 nights and sharing the room, both people get credit for 1 elite qualifying night?

I'm sure there would be logistical complications with this, but just a thought. Would you take this up if it were offered?

Agree, there ought to be an option to split the stay. It’s become a pain point for us!

Although, years ago I had the reverse where we were able to split the bill at checkout and I only got half the spend points for the entire stay!

In practice (particularly if you have no status) you can usually do this already for multi night stays - by booking same room type in different names for different nights and advising the hotel at checkin you’d like to keep the same room - usually they will accommodate such a request. Obviously the two guests having different status complicates things and also you can’t do this with employer paid stays.
