On my upcoming OneWorld award, I have a few transits through BKK where I'd like to leave the airport.

Second one is ok; 7am arrival, midnight departure, change of airline and bags won't be able to be checked through (I've booked a hotel room for that one)

The first, however, is sin-BKK-CMB all on CX with bags checked through and I'd imagine boarding passes issued. The connection is about 8 hours. Will Thai immigration likely have an issue letting us landslide for a few hours? I'd intended to go into the city for dinner. CX probably wouldn't approve... But my concern is with immigration staff.

I think you should be able to leave the airport during an 8 hour transit but I would pay the departure tax (not included in transits) to ensure you have no issues.

Ah yes... Forgot about that. How much is it up to now? and how is it paid?

only pay if you are ASKED to pay. 700 baht. Most of the time you will not be asked to pay

There is no issue with what you plan to do

Ok cool, thanks. I'll run the risk. Worst case they send me somewhere (I'll still have cash so it's easily fixed).

I'm assuming the Oneworld award ticket would include the tax on the 18 hour CX-RJ transfer? I'm 99% sure they won't through-check bags and we'll need to go landside regardless

It's unlikely that the tax is included, you may be asked to pay at check-in. The tax i believe is coded TS if you can find your fare breakdown

I'll see if I can find a taxes breakdown somewhere... No idea where.

That's a little rough! I'm sure there will be no way to check through so the landside connection is required. Glad I asked! One less thing to shock me

you might be able to check it through, I'm not sure what the max time is but 18 hours might be ok. Usually if the system sees the connection within 24 hours the tax is not added in.

Originating in CMB on CX, connecting onto RJ after an 18 hour transit for AMM-CAI. Given my last few experiences in CMB, I can see them giving me some very blank stares!

I do this often ... in and out of BKK same day connecting between airlines but enough time to jump into BKK for a feed, few drinks and catch-up with mates.
Never, ever had an issue. BKK passport have never even actually spoken with me (voice). They just look up, look at passport, blam and I'm through.
On the immigration slip for the address I just write "Transit". Same process in SIN.

Remember if flying J then get your express arrivals card on-board and use the VIP fast rack / premium immigration section which is a bit further along and has beige / brown colouring on sign same colour as the express card you will be given.
